About D16Z6 & D16ZC

Okay, if I bought a D16Z6 (buying motor on Thursday) over a ZC, the swap will be exactly the same just minus the vtec on Z6? I am asking because the Z6 is obviously stronger, and since I am going to turbo the motor I dont really give a shit about vtec. Also if the vtec were to be on, I would have to switch to OBD1 right? Or would I just need the controller?

You better do some searching man, z6 obd1 doesnt just consist of a single wire leading to ur vtec solenoid, Look into obd1 to obd0 conversions http://www.rywire.com/sitob18c5.shtml and if u havent already done the mpfi conversion.. u better look into that first dpfi to mpfi. http://www.4thgenerationcivic.com/how-to's/mpfi_conversion.htm

What makes you think the Z6 is stronger??? :screwy:

Okay well I thought the Z6 was a newer/stronger motor (stock ratings anyone?). And to the Civic 1.5 above, I was asking if I could swap the motor in without using vtec (meaning I wouldnt have to convert to OBD1 right?), and yes I have long ago swapped my DPFI to the PGM-FI system.

ok, im sure the power is close between the z6 and zc, but vtec in the z6 is the reson why it has the power. without it you;ll lose a lot of hp.

The DOHC ZC (130HP) has about the same amount of power as the D16Z6 (128HP)... As someone else stated, this is only due to VTEC...

Essentially, these engines are about the same, and when deciding on one, u often wonder about the other...

The ZC would be much cheaper... It takes less to make it work... Its an all around easier swap... The downside is that the ZCs that are older engines... And since theyve been imported for so many yrs, we are getting to the bottom of the barrel, which means the engines that are imported arent the best of the batch... And its rare to get a good one... Not to say that it cant happen... But this is just what ive been reading... It also has alot less aftermarket support... And is not found in the U.S., so replacement parts are also limited... Unless u know exactly where to look...

The D16Z6 is generally a newer engine, plenty of support replacement and after market... The down sides are these are harder to install, and when done right, are more expensive... Its also harder to swap it in, since u have to go OBD1 (if u do it right)... And since u go OBD1, u have better options for tuning...

So I am guessing that the bottom of the barrel thing applys to SOHC ZC motors as well? Thats what I will be getting. I am going to put new pistons, rings, cams, seals, and a nippon head gasket in the motor for the turbo though, so hopefully that will help.

No... Ppl really dont swap those in much as they arent too much more powerful than the D16A6... So that dosnt apply... Im sure theres still plenty in good condition... The DOHC ZC has been a very popular swap throughout the yrs... So u can imagine, the supply is much smaller...

But are u talking about the SOHC ZC with VTEC or without? I honestly wouldnt bother to swap in the SOHC ZC without VTEC... Simply because its not too much more powerful than the D16A6 (stock CRX Si engine 108HP vs 118HP)...

But if u are talking about the SOHC ZC with VTEC... They are rare engines, so rare even, some still debate whether or not they exist... But basically they are the same as a D16Z6 with a more agressive cam... So im sure all the parts between the 2 are compatible... So yea, Id probably go with the SOHC ZC in this case... As they are the same generation engine as the D16Z6... So they arent older engines...

Yes, non vtec sohc zc is the one I will be going with. I am building the motor for turbo as you read above, and while I am on this, when I replace the pistons, should I also replace the rods? I will be running a low amount of turbo 6-8psi, and even though it doesnt really require a low compression set up I want the motor to run very well and hold together. Hence the reason for replacing head gasket, pistons, rings, etc...Thanks ahead.

In that case, I personally would go with the Z6... More power to start with... And an overall better platform with VTEC... As I said earlier, its OBD1, so that means tuning it (which is required for a reliable turbo setup), u have more options... If only running that low of a boost, I would probably just leave it all stock, unless u want to replace the pistons, rings, ect... But thats on u... Dont forget tho, a rebuild will also require a break in perioid... I dont think rods would be a must either since the boost isnt significant... Usually ppl run about 6-8psi on stock D series internals...
