ignition still on when you remove the key

I need help. This car in beginning to be my living nightmare. It is full of issues. The main one concern right now is that the ignition won't cut off when you remove the key, hence you can drive now without a key. I would hate to think that I would have to disconnect the battery after everytime it is driven and parked. Could someone please tell me how to fix this. I am running out of money and patience, but it is my mother's car, who isn't in the best of health. Help me....please

You need to replace the ignition switch that is located on the bottom of the steering column. You will see a lot of wires connected to it. The key is merely a mechanism to activate the switch. You may have to lower the steering column to change it but it is not hard to change just time consuming due to the cramped area. You may want to take it to a garage to have it done if you are not familiar with auto repairs.
