98 4runner SR5 4WD. I bought this 4runner used and it had a little vibration in the steering wheel. I noticed the tires were worn and they were a cheap brand so I thought replaceing them would fix the problem. I put bfgoodrich AT 265/70/16's on to replace them. After having the tires reblanced 4 times they replaced them thinking they were a bad set of tires. New tires, same problem!! Everybody's saying that this is because the tires are so aggressive but I don't buy that because these tires get great reviews and some of my friends run them. The wheels on the front are brand new from toyota due to tire changer scratching them so they should be fine. Any other ideas?

The tires you bought are great tires. If they replaced them and it is the same result - it's not the tires. I would first make sure the tire shop is balancing you tires on a hub-centric machine, not LUG-centric. See link:http://www.gadgetonline.com/vibration.htm
Start there. Good luck!

I think you mean balance them on a lug-centric machine, not a hub-centric one.

I know this is an old post, but these guys saved me a lot of money. I bought new tires for my wife's 97 4runner. Instantly noticed a vibration in the steering wheel. The tire shop we bought the tires from tried rebalancing them again. Still vibrated, so I got on this forum, and found a shop that had the lug centric balancer. The wife just got home, and no vibration, she is very happy. We were told that it was the wheel bearings going out, and they would have to be replaced. That would have been a 400.00 job, and a pain in the butt. Save your money , and find a shop that has the tools for the Toyota wheels.
