Automatic, if it matters. Runs great, but didn't come with a manual of any sort. My problem is, I don't know what grade of fuel it takes. A friend of mine keeps insisting mid-grade, but I'm not sure. Anyone happen to know? Thanks.

It's not a performance car like a BMW, Audi or anyhing like that so 87 is what you should go with. Hyundai recommends 87 even for the current model Elantras if that helps any.

Yep, I believe that's right. I have a '99 and it recommends 87, so I believe that the '97 is exactly the same.
The only thing to watch is the octane on the pumps. Here in Utah the regular grade is only 85 most places, so I have to get the mid-grade because it's 88.
