paint test

as some of you might've noticed, i've only ever really painted my models red (guess which TS red..)..... which for the most part is kinda ok as they mostly tend to be ferrari.
this time, i wanted/needed to give other paints a try so for this one i wanted a more distinctive colour for my 612.
it's a big car.... (the Dino fits inside with plenty of room to spare...) and appears to be very colour senstive so here's my test painting of mica red+clear coat (never done a clear coat before).
the pics were taken in my conservatory and for some reason, the sunlight makes the paint glow orange/yellow (is this the mica?)

i'll get some indoor pics (properly lighted of course) to show the true colour; it's deeper than these show.
one little question.... a little late but worth it for next time;
do you/should you use a base coat before laying down the mica coat/s?

Thats beautiful!!!!!! Wow....is that just with the Tamiya spray cans? I have Mica Red sittin around somewhere and I just bought a can of Tamiya gloss aluminum as a base coat. Yea, you should really put a base under everything, I think.

could do with a bit more polish.....
(i probably could've gone without sanding before compound... the fresh clear coat seems to be shinier than after compound.... must remember for next time...)
i only put down one good coat of the mica before the clear and i was a bit 'excessive' with the polishing on the driver side door so one edge is a bit 'worn'.
i also dropped it and chipped some of the paint on the passenger side.....
still.
oh yeah....
i put a coat of tamiya gold under the mica.
i was kinda hoping it would maybe give the mica read a deep more orangy hue but instead, it does the 'turn to orange in sunlight' thing instead.
now i'm thinking what would happen if i now put on a coat of pearl clear.....
