How can i tell if my timing chain went out or my tranny blew.. i was going 30mph and all of the sudden the rpms flew up. i coasted the car over to the side as i couldnt accelerate. I cut my car off and tried to resart it but it never would turn it would just make a churning noise like i want to turn over.. i dont know if the computer thinks its still in gear and there for wont turn or the timing chain is bad.. 91 camaro 3.4L 244,000 mi
if it is the timing and i get a new engine i dont want to go through the hasle of v8 because of insurance but what year v6 will give me the power im looking for.. i cruise alot and dont need the v8 in it because i own a 85 vette..

Simple. If the engine was still running when it happened, the timing chain is still in place. To verify this, remove the dist cap and have someone try to start the car, if the rotor turns, timing chain is still there.

Well since you want a V6 get a 3.8 that came in the later year Camaros 98-02 I think, 200Hp.

K, first off, not a 91 camaro...
If it has a 3.4L it is a 93-95.
Secondly, it does not have a cap and rotor, it has coil packs so testing to see if the rotor turns ain't gonna work.
I would say it's not the timing chain, but if you want to test it have a compression test done, if the timing chain is broken you will get some really screwed up results.
Just check for the basics, Fuel, Air, compression, and spark...
Otherwise if you want to give up and go the easy way out go buy a 96+ V6 with the 3.8 they are way more powerful...

yeah the picture in your signature is 93-97 bodystyle, (assuming thats the car your talking about).
liability insurance only is affordable on a v8, that is if you can afford to buy the car cash and dont mind not having collision insurance.

Since he is the owner and stated 91 camaro
I would go on what info he provided.

The 91's came with a 3.4L, I thought only 2.8?
drvngstorm05
05-27-2005, 12:45 AM
2.8's only went to like '90 i think... they started putin in 3.4's towards the end of the 3rd gen...

No, sorry Morley but you are wrong... The 91 V6 was a 3.1 And if it is the car pictured in his sig. that is a 93+ maro I guarantee it. I own a 94 V6 so I know damn well what engines came in what years. If it is a 91 with a 3.4L it is a custom job...
Don't bother argueing with me over it I know I'm right and you aren't. Just help the man with his problem.

but to respond to the question...
the fact that ur car would still rev, but not go anywhere makes me think that u have a torque converter problem... maybe burnt out clutch disks... w/ 244,000 miles it seems real possible...
i'm stumped on why it won't start... but i can almost say for sure that ur timing chain is fine... if it was broken you would have bent several valves while u were trying to start it... and u would definately notice thta noise

Is the 3.4L engine an interference engine? Cause if it isn't he wouldn't have bent any valves.
drvngstorm05
05-27-2005, 12:56 AM
if the timing chain is broken, then the cam won't turn which would leave some of the valves open... turning over the engine trying to start it prolly woulda made the pistons contact the valves...
drvngstorm05
05-27-2005, 12:58 AM
i thought we determined he prolly had a 3.1? besides u said earlier that u thought it was a 2.8 and morley just went by what he said, which was that his engine was a 3.4... i don't think that whole "i'm right ur wrong" thing was called for...
CamarosRsweet94
05-27-2005, 12:58 AM
Only if it is an interference engine...
I don't care what's called for, I know what I'm talking about with what engines were in what years, when somebody tells me I'm wrong when I know I'm right I get Pi$$ed off.

chill... u said 2.8 and he said 3.4, u were both wrong... oh well w/e
besides if u think about it, 3.1 is dead middle of 2.8 and 3.4, so u comprimised :icon16:
i'm not sure if it is an interference engine, but if it kept running even after the power stopped getting to the ground, then his timing chain can't be broken... it wouldn't have run if it was...

just did some quick research, 3.4L 60 degree v6 was first introduced in '91... can't comfirm it right now, but i have heard before that 3.4's were ocassionally found in the last years of third gens... rare but it was an option i believe. so his may very well be a 3.4... but it is definately either a 3.1 or 3.4, not a 2.8...

Nah no 3rd gen came with a 3.4, atleast I dont think because it was all new when it came into the 4th gen. CamarosRsweet is right and I wouldnt really argue with him unless the damn Camaro in his sig isnt his car.

this is a weird problem, at first i was gonna say that the tranny went, but when you said it wouldn't restart makes no sense whatsoever, unless more than one thing broke at the same time, like the linkage broke making it stuck in gear, but if it cranks then that will rule that out. is there anything that was left out?

Back to kindergarten?
We KNOW no one has a picture as an avatar or in a signature that isn't their car.
Take a pill and relax.
The initial advice remains..if it continued to run and had to be shut off, the timing chain is intact.

If the RPM's reved up and the car didn't "go", it would most likely be a transmission problem, broken driveshaft/U-joint or even blown differential.
Now, as to why it won't re-start? Try jumping it, but even better would be to put in a known good battery and try again.
