In hindsight McLaren should have pitted and replaced the tyre, would still have collected a fair bag of points. But would that have been allowed under the rules? Exactly how bad does a tyre have to be before it is considered replaceable?

They could have definitely proved that the tyre was unsafe. In the end i dont think it blew up, it just ripped the suspension off.

Probably, but if that is the case what's to stop a driver deliberately flatspotting his tyres then changing them?

Ultimately I suspect Kimi only has himself to blame. Most likely scenario is he started the chain of events by making the mistake that damaged the tyre that led to the suspension failure.

Is anybody keeping count of the number of tyre failures we've had this year? Kimi's is a big deal because it cost him the race, but Schumacher had two fail in Spain, Massa a couple here and there. I get the feeing we are getting more and more as the tyres are pushed closer and closer to the edge. Now, didn't Max push these changes throug, bypassing the Concorde agreement, on safety grounds? Guess Stoddart was right on the money in Melbourne.

Possibly. But i don't blame him for staying out and going for the win rather than pitting to change the tyre. With victory so close i don't think any racer wouldn't have taken that risk.

Hell, yeah, that is why I said in hindsight. No racing team worth it's salt is going to take the soft option, they're all going to go for the win and damn the consequences. That is the way F1 should be.

Only Kimi is to blame for not bringing the MP4/20 home. During the laps before the suspension blow-up, you could clearly see how the tyre was abusing the susp. He could have taken to option to take it easy on the main straight, sacryficing his win, but still be able to pocket 6 or maybe even 8 points. Alonso is, with 32 points in the lead, getting uncatchable. The championship might be over a lot sooner the most people think...

Now who's to blame for this accident and all the others? Is it the rulings, is it the money, is it Mosley or are it the teams, who keep on racing as if they are allowed to change tyres?? Benettons rear tyres are always very much used and flat, but they, apart from having a good car ( I think the current McLaren is better) they understand how to bring that fast car home, as high up in the ranking as possible. ;)
