HI, I am considering purchasing a 2000 Toyota Avalon xls. The price is right $7800, but the car does have 109,000 miles. I know toyotas can go forever, but do you think that is too high to start out with. It is a one owner car and has all service records. It has been serviced every 5,000 miles. The seller is giving a 3,000 mile 3 month warranty on the car with a 3 day buy back no questions asked. Do you think it is a good deal? Any feedback, positive or negative appreciated. thanks

The first major service for that car is the timing belt at 90,000 miles. At a dealer the charge for parts and labor is between $300-$400. Even if that hasn't been done your deal sounds almost too good to be true. I would buy it after I check the service records with the dealer who serviced it and check the VIN with carfax for any accidents that may have been repaired. I paid $27000 for my wifes 2000 XLS in Feb of 2000. Currently, here I see them between 14000 and 16000. It sounds like you have a good buy.

The warranty and buy-back guarantee are only worth the value of the paper they're written on, unless you are willing and able to afford to take them to court, and you can find them.

Don't overlook a thourough check by a mechanic and a careful and long test drive before you buy just because of the above guarantees.

Look inside the valve cover as best you can for sludge build-up. Also, tell your mechanic that inspects the engine to look out for this. Even though the receipts are there, the 6 cyl engine in this car was very bad for this. 5k oil-change intervals are definitely inadequate if he used dino oil. You may not have a problem if the previous owner only used synthetic oil for every oil change.
