Just wondering what you guys are getting MPG wise on your caravan. I have a 1995 Caravan and I'm currently getting 20mpg according to the LCD.

What size Tornado? The web site says KI-75 and i bought one for my 2003 3.3L and it does not fit. Maybe a KI-70 will.

Sorry so late. the ki-75 is what I bought. If you read the instructions there are 3 tabs you can bend to get a tight fit. If you're saying it's too small, then I'm not sure why.

Just wondering what you guys are getting MPG wise on your caravan. I have a 1995 Caravan and I'm currently getting 20mpg according to the LCD.

I have found out the only good way to get a true measure of mpg is by dividing the gallons to fill your tank by the miles driven.

When filling my tank, I turn the trip meter to zero. I drive till it's time to fill up again and write down the miles I put on the van that's on my trip meter. I divide the gallons of gas I put in, by the miles driven and you'll get an accurate mpg. A cheap $5.00 calulator can do it for you.

For the record. I get around 16-18 in the city to 23-25 on the highway on my 2005 Dodge GC with a 3.8

On the new one, Chrysler is now recomending a 5W20 oil.

'00 CG 3.8 96K Get about 20 when my wife or mother-in-law drives, 23-24 when I drive and I usually drive way faster.
They use the brake way more than I do. We live out in the country and have to drive several miles on crooked country road to reach town.

Our '88 GC with 3.0 got about 22 when we first got it. When we retired it it was getting ~17-18.

Our '95 PV averages 27, with a 3:1 highway/city driving ratio. I was really pleased with that.

I never go by what the computer says. Never found them to be accurate. When I want to know my MPG I fuel up as soon as the "low fuel" alarm comes on, set the trip odometer, and do the math from there. I get very consistent fuel economy estimates.

I have a short wheelbase 01 Voyager, with 3.3L and 4 speed Tranny. I bought in Jan with 47k on it. It didn't have cruise, so I added factory cruise. Cruise was really easy to add, and the kit only cost $200, delivered.

On a trip in March from Pa to South Carolina, the van got almost 23 mpg! This was under absolute optimal conditions:
- Highway driving, at exactly 65mph
- No need for A/c or open windows
- I-95 is pretty flat in Virginia and the Carolinas.

On more recent long trips, we get almost 21mpg

Around town, in the late spring, we were getting 19 around town (little warm up, no need for AC)

This summer, we are mostly getting 15-17 around town, because of the AC. The worst we got was 13, but that could have been a fluke (My 4 year old could have pressed the trip odometer while playing in the van).

The van has no rear air, and and there is a lot of van to cool. Short trips mean a of cooling down of the van. My daughter won't accept having the windows open either.

I should note that we were using Mid-grade, up until June. Since June, we have been using regular. The gas grade probably has little effect on the milage, but is worth noting.

Generally, I am very satisfied with the van and its MPG. The van is a lot more comfortable than our MPFI Neon sedan, and the Neon isn't that much better on gas. The Neon rarely gets better than 24 around town, 28 Highway.

97 Voyager (non-Grand)...with the 3.8L. Note that in 97 the 3.8 put out just 166HP (compared to 158HP from the 3.3L). In 98 the 3.8L was bumped to 180HP.

Overhead console reads an average of 15.4 MPG. Only 80,000 KMs on the van. Mileage seems kinda low to me. A freakin Dodge Viper is rated at 12 MPG.

What's with that?

What's a tornado? Introduces turbulence in the intake?

I chose 17-19 MPG.

I have a 1997 Grand Caravan, 3.3L, a little over 119K miles on it.

I get at least 13 MPG.

One time I went out to Ashtabula County and back (east of Cleveland). A lot of driving was on I-90 and I-71, and at 65 MPH. I had with me my sister-in-law, my 3-year-old son, and our nieces ages 13 and 8--and I got nearly 22 MPG on that trip!

My average is probably around 17 if I had to guess.

This was back in March, and I was headed out to Madison--east of Cleveland, near the Lake/Ashtabula country line.

Know what, I keep thinking it's I-77 I took to I-90. Because I stopped at my sister-in-law's in Doylestown on the way there, so she's not too far from Route 21, which, as I'm sure you know, merges with I-77. I remember taking the express lanes--had to be I-77.

My bad!

At any rate, I usually go the speed limit, so no problem there. That's where cruise control comes in handy. :smokin:

I used to have a '99 Caravan with the 2.4l and 3-speed auto.
Our usual driving got us 24mpg. Took it to California (from Salem OR) and got 31mpg going and 30mpg coming back. That was my favorite mini-van so far. It got totaled in an accident (not my fault) at 30K miles. Bought a '00 Grand Caravan 3.3l (least favorite so far), got totaled in an accident (again not my fault) at 140K miles. Now have a '00 Grand Caravan 3.8l that we bought used and I would say this one takes second place.

just checked this yesterday, went 330.9 hiway miles on 12.8 gallons, I figure 25.78 mpg. 98 Grand Caravan 3.3, 98,000 5/30 oil and drive very steady at 55-65mph and at all cost avoid jackrabbit starts. Maybe I'll get a K & N air filter and see if I can get to 26mpg.

Back to Noen RTs K&N filter. I've been thinking they aren't cost effective, however, after doing the math (yuck!) I figure it would take around 18 tanks of gas to recover the cost of the filter if the mileage goes up 1 mpg. That's based on:

$2.50/gal
18 gal to fill up
Normal filter $10
K&N filter $40
1 mpg increase with K&N filter

Figure 4 tanks/month then it would only take 4.5 months to recoupe the extra $30 for the filter. After that it's gravey plus I understand you clean the filter and don't replace it. The gravey keeps adding up. Not too shabby. It all hinges on the 1 mpg increase. Any bets on if that would really happen?

OBTW - I'm still getting 18-23 MPG 96GC 3.8 190K miles

Neon - Did you see a mileage increase when you made those changes?

neon_rt
12-04-2006, 01:16 PM
I check the mileage all the time, it seems like the average is about 1 more mpg than before. The K&N filter was mostly for the fact that the filter is hard to get to and the K&N only needs cleaned once every 50K miles. The exhaust change is because I wanted a nice tone to the boring, whistling, rushing air-sound exhaust system. It now has a nice rumble when I start it and my wife doesn't complain (good thing) about it being too loud when cruising. The most benefit that I noticed is that it has enough more power to be noticeable. The transmission had some shifting issues (abrupt, not quite at the right time) at some throttle settings for a couple of days. It also now revs to 5000 rpm before shifting WOT instead of the 4600 before.

Ondes, just record your milage at your next fillup and fill your tank all the way after using most of it. Take the new milage and subtract the old, then divide by the amount you filled up by on the pump. :)

Mine is 0, as it is still sitting in the driveway, waiting for problems to be fixed.

Just got back from Florida (1000 miles) with my 90 Caravan 3.0L with 3 speed. I can get 24 MPG at 65 mph. I installed a Tornado and a K&N filter today, so I'll let you know later if it's improved.

Well, after testing my Tornado and my K&N filter, I have to say they made no difference at all (22 mpg on the highway, no hills, run all day, no stops, normal tire pressure.)

What I did find out is that I can get 30% better gas mileage if I just follow a big truck (not too closely.) If I follow the truck CLOSE, the difference is almost 50%. Currently I'm getting 30 mpg on my trips to Florida.

I just bought new tires that allow 50 psi pressure. I'll let you know what happens there.
