I just got this used 95 jetta GL for realy cheap to drive to work and back. The car is in good condition with 150k miles on it. I replaced the front tires, front brakes and a new muffler. the car runs great lots of power,ect... The problem is about once a day I will come to a stop, have the car in neutral (5spd manual) or with the clutch in and the engine will just QUIT!! no sputtering or coughing just up and quit's. I try to restart and it will not start on the first go around. If you wait about 30 seconds it starts right up and runs good the rest of the day. Any ideas? Also in reverse it make more noise then I am used to is this normal? When I got the car it was about 1.5 Qts low oil? I have read they eat oil. Is this bad?

Thanks

You Have Quite A Bit Of Miles. When Was Last Tune Up? Also Clean Your Throttle Body And Air Intake Tube. Make Sure Air Filter Does Not Have Oil On It. Maf Sensor Could Be Bad Also. That Is Attatched In Between The Airbox And Intake Tube. I Know With My 96 All Was Dirty As Well As My Motor Mounts Needed Replaced. Hope This Was Helpful.

Thanks..I may be way off but, I think my problem is the key and ignition now the key if just bumped turns the car off!! It is realy sloppy and with a heavy key chain bouncing around it seems to wiggle enough to turn the car off... So I took my key off the chain and hve been using it alone and so far no problem.. Being that it was a isolated deal only at a hard stop or for my wife going over a bump that it turned off, i think it may be the key?

Most often the electrical part of the ign switch fails causing odd electrical events, your mechanical (key) part may be bad also.
