Does HorsePower matter?

my friend has an integra with only 145hp, and he pOwNz a lot of other cars when he race at the launch, the length of most races were only like a football field becuz he knows he would lose if any longer, but he still wins at the launch, is that weird or is it just me......does hp matter at launching also? im sure he's just an average driver, hes not that good at driving his manual integra, but still, he beats a lot of other guys at launching, how is this so? for a 145hp integra?

HP is important, but it's not everything. Weight, and aerodynamics will make a huge impact. If his 145 hp Integra kills everything else, than cars in your area are pretty slow.

he doesn't beat everyone, beats "most" people from the launch, then later on, he gets kill by them like quarter mile aways, thanks for ur reply, oh and living in wisconsin, heh...u dont see a lot of fast cars here

Power to weight ratio is what really matters. Just out of curiousity what kind of cars is he beating?

It does it you want to keep going.
Torque will get you off the line and HP will keep it going strong.

Torque, and being able to get it to the ground, is what matters. Horsepower is great for bragging about horsepower.
To win a short race like that you need torque, traction and a light weight car.

Why would he beat people on the launch? He drives a FWD car with a Honda engine. Honda engines make power by revving the hell out of them, say to like 8k rpms. They make almost no torque, so it's hard to launch a Honda, and still have traction.

ahhh...i really dont feel like going into the torque v hp argument...integra's are light and have decent power, it he revs hig hand fethers the cluth out just on the brink of traction loss they are pretty quick off of the line...but as already stated, even beating most cars in your area with an integra even in a 60' race...most cars in your area are slow.

I have never seen a FWD car take an AWD car off the line. EVER. Lots of honda and awd dsm drivers in south florida and Ive never seen/heard/watched on video a honda FWD launch quicker than a awd dsm.

show me the vid. The only detriment that the evo has is the rev limiter in 1st that wont let you go above 5500rpm. Even with that any toolbox driving a evo should know how to launch it properly.. which if done right will always be quicker off the line. Pig headed response? sorry but ive just never seen a honda fwd do anything off the line against a awd.

eh....typical cars similiar to his, like celicas, prelude, civics, crx, eclipse, other integras.....typical asian imports, he's not that good, its just his car is weird and somehow gets a really good launch, other than that, his car is a piece of you know what, heheh....he lost to an evo one time, usually he doesn't fare well against those other cars that has twice his horsepower

There is an old adage that horsepower sells cars and torque wins races. Horsepower is nice, but I prefer having gobs of torque pinning you in the seat off the line... just IMO.

Pinning you in the seat, and going no wherefrom too much wheel spin. Both Hp and Tq should even out. Otherwise, you got all them horses with hardly any torque that get you nowhere and all that torque that with hardly any horses gets you nowhere. But, I'm sure you already knew that :)

I guess it all depends on what you do. Gearing though plays a very big role that many people don't consider very much.
I could rig my Mustang up to beat a Ferrari Enzo or a Mclaren F1 off the line for under a grand if I wanted to. If I just put a really high stall converter and 5.73 gears in the thing and I could. The problem is I couldn't get the thing to go over 60 mph.
If you look at the Viper it has a tall gears in it, 3.08s. It's still able to get good 0-60 and 1/4 mile times because it has tons of torque to overcome those tall gears. Once the engine revs up its horsepower is able to take over and take it to very high speeds because of the tall gears.
I heard about this in a 5.0 magazine. They talked about the difference between the Supra and the 5.0. A 5.0's torque is it's main weapon and it's easy to make them 9 second monsters.
A Supra deals more in horsepower and do better to race starting at 60 going down the highway.
If you watch many videos you'll see 5.0's spank Supras off the line and get a few cars ahead of them. Once they get around 120 though their torque is gone and their horsepower is little to nothing and the Supra just rockets past them.
It comes down though to what kind of racing and performance you like and do. If you like to top out on the highway then horsepower does matter. If you're doing stop light to stop light drags then you better getting a torque machine.
The big thing to also consider though is gearing. Gears play a big part in horsepower or torque.

i second that
some of the 3gkt guys have put on gto mr gears, wich are just shorter gears and they broke into the 12's
with the norm gears its more like 13.4
my buddy who use to have a buick gs. he had a little over 400hp and over 500lbs tq, he couldnt catch traction for nothin
on the roll he was mean, but by the feel of things, i was faster then him at high speeds because
1 i'm more aerodynamic(another factor people dont take into consideration)
2. my rediculous tall gears.
