I have a 1996 gmc sierra 1500 2wd. My front tires are wearing on the outsides I am thinking this means front end alignment. someone told me something about you have cut slots so this can be expensive. I also need tires and dont want to wear out new tires due to alignment. I am wondering if anyone has had this done and what it should generally cost(ballpark $$). and is this the only thing that could cause outer tire wear

Outer tire wear can be caused by:
1) Positive Camber
2) It is toe'd in
3) Both 1) and 2)
I know that the 4wds may need a cam installed to adjust the camber but I believe the 2wd uses shims.
A good first step is to get the front end inspected to see if you have any worn parts causing the tire wear.

Chances are it is a toe problem from what you have described... the "CUTTING SLOTS" not that bad. there a what are called "knock outs" installed at the factory and have to be removed to do an alingment. simple thing is take it and get it checked for worn parts and have an alingment.

Getting your knock-out removed will add about $200 to your alignment bill, or so I'm told.

Well I took my truck in the other day to get the alignment. The guy inspected it and told me that I needed to replace the idler arm, pittman arm, inner tie rod ends and shocks. I took the truck home changed all of it Saturday wow what a learning expierience. It took me all day but I know how to do it and could do in a fraction of the time in another 150,000 mi. I saved myself $250 he said it would run 550 for them to do it I had $200 in parts and the alignment with knockouts was $105. Just wanted to give an update and tell everyone thanks for the help. Now I have to figure out how to buy tires.
