Hi I got an 88 crx dx. I blew my engine up so I bought a used one from
japan. i got A D15B 1.5L VTEC. My old engine was a d15B NON-VTEC.
anyways my question is will this newer engine from japan work in my crx?
and also someone said I need to get a 88-91 CRX SI WIRE HARNESS WITH ECU. for the newer engine is this correct? I need to switch my 2 point injection to a 4 point injection. The newer engine I believe came from a 92-95 honda civic.

at minimum you can swap the engine, put on your old distributor, keep your old dual point FI and ECU and your engine would run fine...can't use vtec.
medium choice would be to convert to mutipoint and run on the SI ECU, and the would require a mutipoint FI conversion, and run the VTEC off an RPM switch or something..for DPFI -> MPFI there is plenty of information on in these forums (just use search)
best choice would be to convert to mutipoint FI, OBD-1 and use the JDM ECU from the 92-95 JDM civic D15B vtec, this would give you the most power but probably be the most hassle. The VTEC would run off the ECU and wouldn't require any kind of switch.
it all depends on how much time and money you have to spend.

you dont need a CRX Si harness, you need to convert your existing dual point harness to multipoint. and if you want VTEC to work you have a few choices. you can convert to OBD1 and use the ECU for that engine, or one for a d16z6. also you can stay OBD0 and use an RPM activated switch (msd makes them) to activate VTEC, along with a multipoint OBD0 ECU. or you can ghetto rig it to a toggle switch (dont do this, i cant believe im even mentioning it)
anyway, if you dont convert to OBD1, you will have to get a multipoint OBD0 distributor. these have 3 sensors inside them instead of 2 like the dual point. if your new engine already has a distributor on it, you can use it, but you will have to switch to OBD1. do a search on here, a few people are running that engine...

I will never understand why ppl run out and plop money down on an engine without reading first... I read my ass off before I purchased mine... And in the end, its paying off... I know pretty much what all I am doing in my swap, and what to expect while doing it...
Anyways a few things to consider... When u buy an ECU for it, since u have a DX and have to convert to MPFI anyways, u might as well get an OBD1 ECU, I got the P28 ECU (came from a USDM 92-95 Civic EX/Si)... But had I of known of 2 things, the P08 (the ECU that is made for the D15B and is in the original car its in JDM 91(or 92 in Japan the yrs are different)-95 Civic VTi) runs on a one wire O2 sensor, and it dosnt run rich... The engine came with a 1 wire O2 sensor, I had to shell out $80 for a 4 wire O2 sensor to run the P28 (this all comes down to not researching everything and just goes to show u how bad it is when u dont!)... As for running rich, the P28 is made for a 1.6 liter engine, the D15B is a 1.5, so it will run a tad rich... This is usually fine and not too noticable (so I hear)... But if I could go back, I would have bought a P08 instead... Just so I wouldnt have had to buy more stuff...
As for wiring, I purchased a whole kit from www.rywire.com, great guys there, it came quick, wasnt too expensive and they have excellent support... I would purchase the DX to D16Z6/D15B convertion kit, just do u dont have to do too much wiring... They even add in the MPFI for you, and make it easier for u to switch things back the ECU... And the complete kit, even comes with the connectors and wires for VTEC, VTEC pressure switch, and 4 wire o2 sensor... Keep in mind, u will have to run all these, and if u engine didnt come with the connectors will also have to buy them which most junk yards wont cut up a good harness now a days... Then theres the dizzy... I dont know much about the DX dizzy, but since I bought the kit, it should be plug and play, just hook up 2 connectors to it that came in my kit from rywire... Mine was $190 (for the Si), not sure how much the DX is... And on mine, a little bit of work had to be done inside the engine bay, I had to relocate a few sensors (well I have to, cuz I havnt yet got that far)...
Tranny, u can reuse your old one, but for better performance Id get a CRX Si tranny... They are all stamped L3, but u gotta make sure its from an Si somehow... And if u buy one, make sure its 90-91, the 88 has a smaller clutch and 20 splines, and the 89 has 21 splines and a weaker clutch... The 90+ have 21 splines and a better grabbing clutch... And because of the splines, they cant be mixed... Axles can be reused, as well as the header (atleast on mine, but I ordered a set of Megan headers)...
I think most of it... The best advice I can give u, is READ... I read my ass off, and missed a few things and it ended up costing me more... So just read before u buy anything else!
