Can someone help me with this turn signal issue??

I have done searches and even compared with cars in the junkyard. I have googled and used Chilton's repair manual. I checked out auto parts stores and I just can't figure out why I can't find the flasher relay on this Cherokee

I have a 96 Cherokee SE 4.0 2WD.. The only metal relay I find is about 3/4" wide and cylinder shaped. The one available at stores #550/552 is mushroom shaped and 1.5" wide and short. The prongs do not line up..

My turn signals don't word, but hazards do. Does that narrow it down to the relay? The fuse is fine and according to Chilton's, it is #4 at 20 amp. Since the hazards do work, that means bulbs are fine? No short in wiring?

It should be on the fuse block under the dash. There are 2 round relays, the other is the hazard flasher.

The flasher type is going to depend on the year of the Jeep. I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee with the same problem. The fuse block is on the right side kick panel behind a removable door, but the flasher, I'm told by Autozone, is up under the driver's side dash in the wiring harness. When I flip the turn signals on, I hear a click under the dash on the driver's side, but I haven't tried to locate it yet. I bought the electronic relay (flasher) and it's a black 1" cube with 5 or 6 prongs on it. I also have an '88 Jeep and its' flasher is a round metal can (but it still works). Figures, doesn't it...

I looked at the 93 shop manual and it shows the turn flasher located (round metal) with the fuses, plugs into the fuse block, then looked at my 2000 shop manual and it referred to as a combination flasher , does turn and 4 way, looks long and narrow, doesn't say where it is.I don't have anything for 96.

Hi everyone, the last post to this thread was Aug 05, but I have the same problem except none of my flashers (hazard or turn) are working, and none of the replies answer Huerito's original question: Where the hell is/are the flasher relays on a 1996 XJ SE?

Just so you know, there are no relays mounted to the fuse panel on my 96. I have found a relay panel mounted to the underside of the dash on the right side of the steering column. I have to lay on my back with my head stuffed into the gas pedal to see it (then it's too close to let my middle aged eyes see anything). On this panel, there is a blue relay that I heard cycling when my turn signals still worked. It is Chrystler #56007348. I'm going to call NAPA and see what this is.

Started out my four-ways weren't working, now none are working...

QUICK UPDATE: Went to NAPA with previously described relay. They took one look at it and said 'that's not a flasher, that's just a relay'. Their suggested replacement was a two pin cylinder style instead of the 5 pin ice cube thaat I have. I popped the 5 pin job open and BEHOLD it IS a flasher. Naturally they didn't have one and it's too late today to order one.

On my way home I remembered I still have the carcass of my wrecked 96 XJ out in the back field (welcome to Idaho), so I went to see if it had the same relay - it did. I've plugged it in and now I have four-way flashers but still no turn signals.

Any 96 specific help much appreciated...!:naughty:

I believe there are SEPARATE fuses for the hazard (4-way) flashers and the turn signals. There almost has to be ... 4-ways work without ignition on, turn signals with ignition on only.

I would look for the turn signal fuse and check that.

According to the '94-'96 Parts Guide I have, there are 2 "flashers". The Hazard is PN 2932 877, the Turn Sig is 5600 7348 (the one you have and the number I posted earlier). The diagrams are not "exploded" views but it appears they both go on the panel under the dash.

Thanks guys, you're exactly right! After plugging in the relay the other night, I went back in and started pulling fuses again. Didn't find any fuses burned. Then started pulling relays checking for poor contact. While I was doing this my teenage son was telling me about the latest news at school, so I can't honestly tell you everything went back into the same hole it came out of, but I can say everything now works, including the rear window defrost which hasn't worked since I bought it...

Hi. I have a 1994 Jeep Cherokee and the flasher went bad and my signals or hazards didn't work anymore. I spent 4 weeks talking to people and looking all over my Jeep for the flasher. I looked through all sorts of manuals, talked to the Jeep dealer in my town, my mechanic and a few other guys. I ended up finding the part inside the glove box. There is a panel on the bottom of the glove box, that just has to have some screws removed and then it was right under there. Mine was a gray square looking 5 prong plug. The new one that I got from the auto parts store, is black. My signals and my hazards work great now. Hope this helps out someone else because that sure sucked to find.

i have the same issue, no turn signals, no sound or green flashing arrows, i know where my flashers are, but i cant find one in any auto parts store. the only ones i can find are round and have only 2-3 prongs, mine has 5. any ideas? ive checked fuses and everything

if you know that that 5 pin unit is flasher and auto part stores dont carry go to dealer how much more could a flasher be?

Park Lights: They simply blow the fuse each time I turn them on. This has been going on for several months, and since I only drive during the day, no big deal; however, with it getting dark sooner each day, I now need to fix this issue ASAP.

What I Have Attempted To Do To Fix This Issue:
I have checked the license plate lights, the rear left quarter panel for pinches, and checked the right front fuse panel wiring as well for pinches. I simply cannot find any bare wires, or anything that appears to be crossed or grounding out.

Turn Signals/Hazards: The fuse for these blows immediately when the prongs of the fuse touch their slot. This issue just popped up this morning, and I have no clue why all of a sudden it is happening.

What I Have Attempted To Do To Fix This Issue:
I have checked all the usual culprits - wires touching, pinched wires, cracked lenses with moisture, etc. I have come up empty.

I am looking for more detailed fixes to these issues, if they exist. The previous comments are great, but I am looking for more suggestions, as the above mentioned have not panned out for me thus far.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

To really check out an electrical system you need a wiring diagram.

they have good wiring diagrams.
You have to use an ohm meter and check the wires for continuity. Then put one end on the end of wire and the other end on a ground. When you find the defective section run a new wire.

You'll usually get a better response with a new thread, but I'll try to help.

I suspect the multifunction switch on the steering column....it can cause numerous issues with lights.

Other manufacturers have a problem with bad connections for the plugs on this switch. I would inspect the plugs carefully when looking at the switch.

To: 19JeepGCherokee96 . Pull out each bulb and check the sockets they can rust fall apart and short. you've tried the wires leading to sockets but I don't see you saying you pulled bulbs.Also if you have trailer hitch wiring (I dont know) check there also.LOL

I took my Jeep to a Jeep Dealer for work.

They said my electrical wires are melted in 3 different places, and they need to remove the dash. Below is the description they put on my work ticket:

"...traced short to ground; has melted wiring coming out of power dist. center;..."

Has anyone else had this type of issue? They wanted to charge upwards of $500 to fix it, and sadly, I just don't have that kind of cash to spare at this time.

Suggests, tips, ideas, Hail Mary's appreciated.

At least it fixed thanks for posting back.Oh I see its not fixed just diagnosted. Pull those wires apart and resplice the distra box is under hood easy to get to and opening dash not even that bad rhandwor may have hit problem on head if no money you need to get dirty like the rest of us.lol

If your lucky you can splice the wires under the dash, also you might find a power dist. box at a junk yaerd or on line cheep
