2001 JGrand Cherokee Clunking

Hi all.
I recently took my Jeep into NAPA regarding a 'clunking' sound coming from the right front drivers side wheel (or in that vacinity). They couldn't replicate the noise when they had it on the rack but they did hear it when driven. It happens when making turns at slow speed. They lubed everything, put new tie rods on, new track bar, checked wheel bearings, brakes and then threw up their hands. They couldn't figure it out and didn't want to replace the ball joints without know that is exactly what the problem is. Has anyone had this 'clunking' happen with their Jeep?
Thanks for any help.

I do. I've got a '96 GJC limited. I get the clunking from the passenger side front wheel. I think it might be a problem with the breaks because when I hit them, the clunking dissappears. The other thing is that it's not always the same volume, but I haven't been able to nail down when it's louder.

Thanks bgmoss28, I appreciate the reply. Apparently they checked the whole braking system also. I guess I am going to have to take it to the dealer and bite the bullet. Good luck with yours...........

I recently had a clunking noise at my front wheels when turning, my problem was a bad axle u-joint (it had too much play in it)! I replaced both axle u-joints & that problem is solved. If you don't have front axle u-joints, check your cv boots!

Today was a really nice day, and since my A/C doesn't work, I drove with the windows open, which let me hear squeaking. It seems that the squeak coincides with the clunk, but for the most part, the wheel was turning too fast to be absolutly sure. My lack of knowledge and tools prevents me from really taking anything apart, but I can't see anything out of the ordinary. Anyone else heard a squeak too? It's very odd to me that both the squeak and the clunk disappear when I hit the breaks. Because of that, I can't help but think the breaks are somehow related to this problem. Could it be that something's loose that the pressure of the break tightens, stopping both the clunk and the squeak? What would it be?

I was just thinking - my Jeep has a tendancy to drift to the right - the side with the clunk and squeak. Could that have anything to do with this clunking and squeaking?

I apparently had a bad front hub bearing . The sad thing was that another shop had just replaced that exact same bearing but used the wrong part. $650.00 later and the jeep drives like it should.
Again, thanks for the help.

Sounds like it's time to go back to the shop that messed it up and get a refund. Get some evidence and a note from the manager at the shop that did the work right.
