How would you compare these ferraris in terms of 1) performance and 2) appeal?
In terms of performance, the 430 seems to be very close to the F50 in acceleration, but I'm not positive how the handling compares, though I'd imagine the F50 to come out on top
In terms of appeal, even though I think the 430 looks far better than the F50, the race car feel and high-revving v12 draw me to the F50

F50 weighs less and has more power. You do the maths.

I realize that the F50 weighs less and has more power but if you look at the actual times these cars post acceleration-wise, they're pretty close.
F50
power: 513 bhp
torque: 347 ft. lbs
weight: 2710 lbs
0-60: 3.7-3.9 s
1/4 mile: 11.7-12.1 s
trap: 122-123 mph
F430
power: 483 bhp
torque: 343 ft. lbs
weight: 3200 lbs mfr est.
0-60: 3.7-3.9 s
1/4 mile: 11.7-12.0 s
trap: 120-123 mph
As you can see, the times indicate that the acceleration of both cars is very close at least to about 130 or so. After that point, the F50 with its higher top speed and all would most likely take out the 430. According to the power and weight numbers, yes, an F50 should take out the 430 soundly; however, the tested accelerations say otherwise. The only reasons I could possible think of the 430 having a similar 0-60 and q.t. would be the launch control the 430 has and the quicker paddle shifters. Either way, I think the 430 shouldn't be easily dimissed because according to the data, it would give an F50 a decent challenge on a straight
The tracks might be a different story though.....

These cars are really not comparable

I would think the v12 would be faster past 1/4 mile speeds. So even if the f430 does match it in acceleration to ~120, I think the f50 would kill it in the top end.
IMO, i'd rather have an f430...the f50 styling is not 100% to my liking.

Don't know why, but I guess I would pick the F430 for the appeal, but it is undeniable that the F50 has more punch

It takes some getting used to.
I got used to it by grabbing a chair, sitting down and staring at it for half an hour. I think it's fair to say it worked.

i'm not sure which i'd choose between the F40 and F50.....the F50 has that awesome V12 and handles better than the F40 from what i've heard.....but the F40 is even more of a stripped down racer and looks much better than the 50.....i guess i can't make a decision unless i actually get to drive them and see how they feel; unfortunately i'll probably never even get to touch one *sob sob*

Sadly this discussion is mostly speculation considering very few if not ANY of us have driven each, but from what I hear the F40 was much lighter, and thus handling and braking were improved. I would assume the F40 to be the nimbler one, and the F50 the faster one.
Either way, I'd take the F430 Spyder in red over the F50 any day, the F50 is so ugly.
