issues with 944 S

Hey Guys,
i have a 1988 944 S and its done about 250.000 kilometeres, its been serviced frequently and just recently i started to here a clunking sound from the rear.
I dont know too much about cars, but i do know the gearbox is in the back for the Porsche 944, the clunking sounds only occurs when im in gear.
when the clutch is down and im changing through gears there is no sound but when i release it in gear again it makes a 'clunk clunk clunk'.
Again when i rev it in neutral no sound. It seems to getter faster as i drive and sounds like im draggig a tin can under the car. Sometimes it stops and is ok but, in the last couple of days it has been geting more frequent.
anyone know what this could be?
again i dont know too much cars and im gonna take it to my porsche mech. soon but just wanted a heads up for what it could be and how much it willl cost to fix.
p.s i love my Porsche 944 S but it seems a bit laggy in performance and handling, it only has 15" telephone dials on it but still, the way most people talk about 944's handling it seems like it should be better around corners.
i want to get some 17" Turbo Cup 1 rims for it in the near future.
For the performance side of things; the injectors have been cleaned, spark plugs changed, all top up of fluids frequently, i put a K&N air filter in didnt notice much change as it already has a hi-flow exhaust on it.
i dont know what else to do any ideas??

Has the clutch been changed?
If you still have the original rubber centered clutch, the rubber center could be disintegrating and causing the limp home mode metal to metal coupling inside the clutch rubber center to engage and be able to drive it home.
Do not drive the car, it will cause more damage to your transaxle ring and pinion.
If the clutch has been changed, it could either be the cv axles or the tranny ring and pinion.
Good luck and let us know what you find out.
