I just bought a 93 firebird TA 6 speed. When i'm on hard acceleration the car dies and when I let off the gas it comes back on. Then I was driving it at 65 in 6th and all of a sudden the car started to chug and the tach went down to 0 and the check engine light came on. Do you think it's the optispark? The car has 125k on it, and I'm guessing they never replaced it. When I had my 93 Z it had a similar problem but when it stalled it would never start this one starts right up after it stalls. I was also thinking it was the spark plugs they might be worn out. Also wanted to know if a optispark off a 94-97 would work on a 93? I know 93 had the non-vented ones. Please help.

man i wouldn't doubt it. ive changed 3 opti sparks and they all act differently. mine sometimes would blow the PCM IGN fuse, along with skipping sometimes lightly sometimes violently. the severeness of the misoperation would increase with the worse the weather was. like if it was 85-90 degrees and im going home in rush hour traffic, the car would hardly start moving. from a stop i'd have to rev to about 3500 and just ride the clutch to get it to go anywhere. basically, i would check all of the spark plugs and shit if theres nothing wrong than its probably the distributor bc they usually go before 120K

I think the car might have a bad tank of gas. I changed the fuel filter and the gas smelled bad. I wondering if the car had been sitting somewhere for a while. I'm going to drain the tank and put some new fuel in and see if maybe that's the problem. I just sold a 94 Z that had a similar problem but when you gased it, it would pop back through the throttle body, I drained the gas and put a new filter on it and it ran fine after that. I guess if the gas doesn't solve it I'll have to put a opti on it... I'm just trying everthing I can not to spend over $200 for a opti. Also do you think a 94-97 opti will work on the 93, I know they are vented unlike the 93's.

93 and 94 opti's will work but 95-97 will require swapping alot of parts. Your best bet is to buy a Cap and rotor set for a 95-97 and swap to the vented cap and then run a hose from the intake to the vent thats on the cap. BTW. I have a spare opti for your vehicle, if your interested, make me a offer.
