How do you muffle air compressor noise?

I'm using a regular handyman's air compressor with a tank. Just wondering if any of you have any recommendations on how I can muffle/reduce the noise while the compressor is running. (I've searched already and haven't come up with anything).

are you making it quieter for you or someone else ? if its for you just get some ear mufflers, if its to shut-up the neighbors then i dunoo........cover it with pillows, but let it get air for cooling.

How about using it to fill a 5-10 gallon air tank, and using the tank as your air supply? That's as quiet as it can get, just refill it every so often when the noise won't be a problem.

i have the same type of compressor. I am going to bulid a box around it and line it with styrafoam sheets and have a extended tube for the air intake and that sould make it quieter

you may wanna ventilate the box as well or you could coock your compressor. the heat generated from the friction and compression of air will no doubt fry the rings of your compressor in a short amount of time if it doesn't have adequate ventilation for heat dissapation.

I have bit of thick foam rubber carpet insulation/padding that my compressor sits on. It certainly doesn't cut the noise as much as an enclosure, but it does insure vibrations aren't passed into the floor- it helps a surprising amount. :2cents:
