knocking in engine on belts side

my 93 taurus that has a 3.8 liter v6 in it is knocking on the belts side...it has 85,000 miles on it and i dunno if the timing belt has ever been replaced...the knocking is pretty loud...hav e any ideas?

Take the belts off and run it to eliminate a bad accessory. Is no rubber timing belt on that engine if that's what you're thinking. Lots of things cause an engine knock, bearings, lifters, rocker arms, broken pistons and more than you want to hear about Process of elimination will track it down.

It is probably the water pump. Like the man said, remover belt start engine and then you will know.
Pump is only fifty bucks, but it is a bitch to R and R, because the 3.8 is a tight fit.
I had to loosen all three mounts and really lift the motor to get the pump out.
