I value my head, so I wont throw a leg over a bike for any reason without a helmet on.

I ALWAYS wear my helmet! Always! I think it is because I value my brain. I don't know. I think it is a very hard thing to survive without one (Although I know a few people that I think do go on without one.)

About 1 1/2 years ago Pennsylvania repealed the manditory helmet law in this state. If you follow the rules (either MSF graduate or 2 years licensed riding experience) you can go riding helmet-less. A group that I previously belonged to actually protested against the no-helmet law. We did an "undie" ride. Everyone rode through the city (Pittsburgh) wearing nothing but underwear (and a helmet) of course. People used body paint to write things like "At least my head is protected" and "I always wear my helmet" on themselves. It got some really great media attention, infact I think I still have some pictures of one of the organizers riding around in her underwear that day. You all know her as saturntangerine. :screwy:

Always wear mine. I went over the bars about 2 weeks ago after being cut off by a drunk late at night. My head had the initial impact. Only thing that happened was a broken mirror on the bike, and a beat up helmet. Worth the $200 all the way!!

There's some of us that learned the hard way. I was in the parking lot across the street, went down and ate a concrete parking block with the side of my head, cracked my skull, caused my brain to bleed and because of that, I was unable to continue with studys (I had a 4.0GPA premed) and went to work. I've finally made it back to where I can think clearly enough to reenroll, but my memory is only a quarter of what it used to be. This was a 5-10mph wreck, no other broken bones, minor scrapes (though I did tear the cartilage in my right ear). There's no reason for that amount of damage to be done in such a small accident. I for one don't want to know what could have happened. I got lucky, but I'm not about to push my luck too much (was back up on a bike 2 mo after the crash) and I went out, bought a nice helmet that I don't mind wearing, and even when I run to the hardware store two blocks down, it's on my head. Had I worn one the night I went down, I could have avoided more than $7k in hospital bills, brain damage, and a f'd up ear. :2cents:

UMM DAMN, sorry to here that.
The first time I went down it was at like 10mil hr, and i did not even notice because i had my helmet on. When i got home I looked at it and was like damn you could see marks on the side were my uper forhead would be.

went down twice in low speed within first few months of riding. always wore my helmet, but in this case, it wasn't the job for my helmet. I also wore Teknic full-leather jacket, so that cushioned my fall. both times I managed to roll away from the bike to protect my legs.

In my country wearing helmets are compulsory. There are fines and demerit points for not wearing one. I cannot understand why in the U.S. it is not mandatory. It saves lives and maimed features and sorry for saying this but if any bikers here that considers themselves enthusiasts and do not want to wear a helmet to look 'cool' are in fact uncool.

Each state has the ability to decide if motorcyclists need to wear helmets. Unfortunately, in Pennsylvania, the law that required helmets was repealed almost 2 years ago. Needless to say, the # of deadly accidents has risen drastically. Let Darwin have his hayday for a while... the biker gene pool needed a lil cleansing, IMHO.

Yet i'm still kicking so the plan has failed :lol2: I see no reason why we should be forced to do to some safty things but not others but thats nother story. I was thrilled when my helmet moved to a dedicated wall hanger.

I use to wear it when I was learning now I never do I just like to cruise around feel the wind on my hair.

You should've added, "knock on wood" :uhoh:. I hope you stay safe for your sake.

Yesterday I spoke to an old friend after a long time, his sole transportation is a '03 F4i. He told me that the only time he went down was on a pocketbike doing 35 mph. He said he doesn't usually wear helmet when rides his mini-bike, but for some reason, he decided to do so this time around. It had been raining that day, he leaned the bike more than he should've on wet surface, lost control, and the bike sort of did a lowside followed my a slight highside when the bike caught on something, it ended up flipping him up as the bike continued to turn towards him. He hit his head directly on a concrete ditch. Other than minor scratches, he rode the bike back home. It saved his life, I told him may be you wore it because you knew you were going to do something stupid :D. He's 19-20, and never rides without a helmet.

I wear mine most of the time but I feel that if you are going to be safe go all the way. wearing nothing but a helmet and a smile is stupid. You need the full gear. And I learned this the hard way too. I went down pretty soft, but the helmet did save my scalp, but my whole left side looked like ground beef. It sucked... bad

plus I new someone who got arrested for wearing nothing but a bug filled smile. I bet it would be hard to enforce that if you did it yourself

Hmm...interesting...in fact in Singapore, the fuzz can pull you over if you are wearing shorts and sandals! Thats how serious they look at motorcycle safety here!

For me, I wasted a OGK helmet once when I went into the air after a car pulled in front of me on a rainy day. I was wearing nothing short of a touring jacket, gloves and boots and got away without a scratch although I got a slight fracture in my spine.

I started out riding in the dirt and would never ride there without a helmet so it's just natural that when I hit the street I continued to wear one. You might never need it but if you do why take the chance. Asphalt can grind off a lot of meat before you quit sliding.

seriously i pity anyone who doesn't wear a helmet. I haven't gotten a bike or my bike licence but i want one for my first vehicle. I'm going to wear a helmet every time i go out. If you go without a helmet and wack your head and end up brain damaged, you're not just affecting your life, you're affecting the lives of your family and friends. Imagine the stress you put on your family as they wait in the emergency room to see if you're going to have your brain capacity deminished to that of a 5 year old. I care to much for my family and friends to put a stress like that on them. If you have kids it's even worse, you smash your skull and can't work, it's their mom that has to provide for the family and you if you live. Plus if you live outside of canada, you have to pay medical fees. It's just selfish not to wear a helmet, i completely agree with the law to wear a helmet and the law to wear a seatbelt. You don't wear a seatbelt, get into and accident, not only can you suffer much more severe injuries, you can fly out of your seat and block paramedics from saving someone else, and you can damage you're kids' lives for the same reasons. Safety is there for a reason, chose not to be safe and you dont just affect yourself, think of your family next time you think about not wearing a helmet or seatbelt. just my two cents.

all this talk of stacks and safety made me think. when i first started out i bought all the good gear and wore it all the time.

now, many years down the track, i get complacent and go out with just my stack hat, shorts and a T.

when i go to the track or out for a full-on ride (not just to the shops) i wear full leathers.

anyway who else wears a back brace? just as much damage can be done to the back as a head......

I always wear my helmet cos in Australia its ilegal not to wear one. I try to wear my leather jacket as much as i can, but if its hot i dont. Ive been riding on the road for a few years now and have only just laybuyed my first pair of boots. I do wear gloves most of the time and i dont have any leather pants yet.

:2cents: I definately wear mine. Even just to go to the store on the corner for a pack of smokes. I use my full face all the time, and my modular on bike runs. My cruiser buddies give me grief because they wear those novelty turtle shells with stickers all over them, and take them off when we cross state lines, but I always leave mine on. I have options, I can leave the faceshield up in stop & go traffic, and have as much airflow as they do, but I can flop the sheild down when it starts raining and not have to stop. I love to watch them pull over, and put the full face helmet on when it starts to rain. I think to myself, Damn you should have been wearing it the whole time. I guess I'm missing something.

To each their own, I don't think it should be mandatory, However I wear mine all of the time. I've been known to not wear it once or twice when i first got to this state, just for the novelty of it.

It's still a relevant thread given all the folks who still insist on riding with no helmet or some kind of fake-plastic-chrome-'Nazi Panzer Commander' bucket on their head.

Are you running FireFox 3? It seems to be not entirely compatible with AF's Vbulliten and gives these problems. Personally I refuse to upgrade for these reasons.
