I have a 1990 Toyota 4Runner. And it's leaking power steering fluid. How do I determine where it is leaking from?

I know it's power steering fluid because I have to put fluid in at least once a week!

Thanks!

Get under the truck and find the source of the drip, usually a low point in the tubing or a suspension component or the chassis. If it's a tube, find which way up the tube the drip has come - it will be wet on one side of the drip and dry on the other. Follow the wet until it leads you to a fitting. See if there is a sign of the fluid leaking onto the fitting from above it. If not, then the fitting is leaking. Keep tracing the fluid trace until it stops.

If it is dripping from a component, you have to figure out if it is dripping onto the component from above it or is the drop running down from somewhere above, but in contact with the component.

The normal source of PS leaks are fittings, reservoir fill caps (O-rings), and lines.

These types of leaks are the most tricky to find since the fluid can be blown backward by wind or fan blow while driving. Try running the engine at idle and move the steering around a while until you see a drop on some newspaper you put under the truck. Shut off the engine and trace this drop. It is more likely to have been pulled directly down by gravity than blown backward and your task will be easier.

I just wanted to let ya know i had same problem too .. look at the top of your Steering Box ... there is a BIG nut on the top with a coder pin in it ... on mine .. it kept coming loose (probably due to offroading) and would leak like a siv from the top of the box. Just tighten it down and see if that helps. I still have to tighten it every now and then.

I also have a 90 4runner, and I had the exact same problem. I had to replace the gear box in my 4runner, and that fixed the problem.
