A.i.r.

sorry if this is a stupid question but what is A.I.R. i see it when im looking at headers. but i dont know what it is and they really dont explain it either, form what i have seen. so if anyone knows or knows where i can find the info that would be great.thanks

A.I.R is part of the smog system, its air injection and puts air in by the cat on your exaust to help burn up the fuel so u run clean out the pipes. necessary if u plan to stay legal or have to pass smog testing.

The A.I.R system has a couple of functions...first, when the engine is started it pumps air into the exhaust manifolds/headers (15 seconds) via the PEDES (PRESSURE OPERATED ELECTRIC DIVERTER/ELECTRIC SWITCHING ) valve and the little tubes that have a one way check valve on their collector. This rapidly raises the exhaust temp. to get the O2 sensor and cat up to temp.
Next the PEDEs valve switches to the converter, where it pumps air to the cat. to get it up to lightoff temp faster (15 seconds), then it goes to divert and just dumps the air from the pump back to atmosphere.

All in all, if you have emissions testing or a new cat. you want to keep this system operating.
