Geo transmission

I have a 1990 Geo. For some reason it does not like to shift down into second or first while the car is rolling.

This problem has come up in a few Geos I have purchased and I figured the synchros were worn.

My latest one shifted fine before I put the clutch in.

Is there an adjustment I can make without removing the transmission or is it a synchro problem that can only be fixed by removal?

Any ideas would be helpful.

Did you replace the pilot bearing? It may be gummed up causing the inputshaft to rotate with the clutch disengaged.

Good idea. I too was trying to think of something along those lines.

I replaced everything. I typically get a "clutch pack". They have the throwout bearing, pressure plate, clutch and pilot bearing etc.

There is some kind of mysterious casting just below the clutch cable on the transmission. I am not sure what it does but I took it off to add my tranny fluid. Maybe I knocked something out of adjustment?

If you change the fluid, you have to use a special synthetic. that can help. My 90 Metro won't downshift into 2nd, but at any speed under 20 it will go into 1st if you goose the engine, then shift up into second. It's either that or round a corner at 15 and lug it in 3rd. Don't worry about it, just drive around it.
