I Am In The Process Of Buying A 1996 Jetta Gls. Is There Supposed To Be A Keyless Remote. The Seller Only Has A Key. If So How Do I Get One And How Do I Program It. Also Is There A Way To Check With Vw About Maintainence Records??

I don't know of a '96 having keyless remote unless it was aftermarket installed.

As far as I know, NO, there isn't a keyless remote. They aren't true power locks. They are vaccuum locks. There are vaccuum hoses going to each door as well as the fuel door. The car uses an air pump to push and pull diaphrams in each door to lock and unlock. The fuel door locks as well with this. It all happens by turning the front door locks with the key. I am sure there is an aftermarket part you can get to actuate the air pump to be "keyless"
As for the maintenance records. You can simply call VW's service desk and they can help you. Depending on the age of any car... they have records of EVER TSB(technical service bulliton), Recall, and maintenance that was done BY THE DEALER(or certified VW maintence) or that was recorded. Anything that was done DIY(do it yourself) or by a 3rd party shop, most likely is not recorded. However, if VW did it, it is recorded and all you have to do is call, give them the VIN# and ask, they are obligated to tell you everything that was and wasn't done. Just the same, you can check to see if any of the announced TSBs were serviced on your car. If you are still not too old, they should be able to do them now.
Check out www.alldatadiy.com and look up your car in the TSB/Recall section and see what is listed as supposed to be done. Then compare that list with VWs records.
Have fun, and rememer... Act insecure and unsure and you will be treated as such. Act like you have some large nuts and shops will listen to what you have to say... ;)
