I need to get to my rear speakers and either replace or repair wiring. Did a search about this on the site and got nothing. Anyone have any suggestions on how I go about this? Thanks

I have a 1997 LS and if the speaker is on the door, all you have to do is remove the door panel. First off, unscrew the plastic trim around the window (2 screws) then, on the door, where you hang on to it to close it, there should be a little plastic cap. Pop that off and there should be 2 more screws there. after you remove those, carefully use a panel remover, or a flat head screwdriver, and start to remove the trim clockwise starting at 1-2 oclock. don't start from the top, since the trim hangs on from the window, and doesn't have clips. as soon as you remove the panel, you should have access to the speaker. BUTTTTT if you want to replace the speaker, you will need to buy special adapters or new door brackets for the speakers, as GM decided to use the oversized speaker on there, or the 6 3/4 size speaker. Nothing else will fit perfectly in that hole. if your like me, I just went to my local fry's electronics (any car audio place should carry this item) and purchase a METRA speaker adapter plates 3043. (HERE IS A LINK OF WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT http://www.audioviper.com/acatalog/AudioViper_82_3043_1084.html)

anyways, drill out the rivets, and fit this new bracket the best you can, since the holes are NOT going to match up. but as long as the speaker alignes with the hole in the door, it should be no problem. mark where the holes are going to be, drill new holes, RIVET the bracket into these new holes. and VOILA you have new brackets that support 6 1/2. I did this for ALL 4 doors on my Blazer, and installed some pretty sweet memphis audio 6 1/2 components. anyways, the project should take you upwards of 2 hours, depending on how many tools you have available. ( I have a rivet gun, some dont!) Anyways, as soon as you put your new speaker in, replace the panel. Try to align it up to where it hangs onto the window, and then pop it back in. Then just screw all the screws back in, with the trim you had originally taken off, place the little cap back on the door, and you have a new speaker. It's not a fast and easy task, but when done right, it makes for new speaker acess, and if you have the right speakers, your sound system should KICK ASS!
