rpm surges intermittant 2001 ranger

4.0L ranger, manual trans.,at highway speed rpm sometimes hangs up
@2500 when shifting.when coasting at slow speed ie. downhill the engine speed suddenly surges up to @2500, it eventually drops back
to normal idle but its annoying when using the engine to hold back on
on downhills. ANY IDEAS

is check engine light on? any codes?

ckeck engine light NOT on. haven't taken it to a garage with equip.to
ckeck for fault codes.good idea,maybe the next step.a friend thought
it might be the throttle position sensor starting to get flakey.any input
on this?

could be but there is usually an ideling prob when the tps goes bad.

Look for any binding in the accelerator linkage also. Check to be sure the spring is on the throttle return. Look for anything that seems out of place around the throttle body area. Another thing, I know it is stupid, but, do you have floor mats in truck? If they ball under the accelerator it will happen. Chased a CV cruiser for 2 days with driver stopping by every 2 hours. Floor mat was hanging on throttle pedal. :uhoh:
