Having trouble with my 1996 Geo Tracker. Starts and runs fine. Problem is when I come to a stop the idle dips down and car dies. Starts right up and idles fine after restart. But problem happens again when I go to stop. Ideas anyone? Does this with or without AC on. It is a 4x4 also. But never use it.

I just bought mine, it has 99M on it. I have been told it is probably the IAC valve just as you suspect. I took mine off and cleaned it but didn't help. A new one at the Chevy dealer is about 300 dollars so I plan on exhausting all efforts before I cough up that amount.
Thanks for the reply, and please let me know how it came out and how much you paid for yours, Autozone and Oreillys did not have a part number for mine.

Mine was doing the same thing. I took the IAC Valve off and cleaned it several times with some starting fluid and then blew it out with an air hose. It had some carbon build up in it. When I blew it out with the air hose some of the carbon particles came out. It's been 2 weeks now and still idiling fine. Hope this helps.

Did that help you any?

Where is it located on the engine? Is it complicated to take off?

Anyone out there have a (solid) solution for this one? It would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Does your engine stall when you remove you foot from the Accelerator pedal rapidly? If so try the electric dash pot. It looks like the idle stop on the throddle body. Engines must slow down slowly. Good luck.

Can you elaborate on what you mean here please--if so, it would be a great help to me. Thank you, Dave

When you let off the accelerator pedal fast a car engine will always stall so about 40 year ago they started using mechanical (spring) device to slow down the rate of closure of the butterfly in the carb. In late model cars they use electric and vacuum to control this device It was called a dashpot. On your tracker you will find it as an idle stop located where the throttle cable ends on the quadrant ( the thing that rotates the butterfly in the throttle body) When you move the Quadrant to increase RPM's the little piston moves out and when you close the Butterfly the piston contacts the Quadrant. If you increase you idle RPM's and your engine doesn’t stall (try 1000RPM) This may be your problem. Good luck

Thanks so much, I will lookin into this because other than this problem--I like this tracker a lot--and with gas prices--this thing is a dream living in western PA snowy winters.

Thanks again,
Dave

Check for leaking or cracked vacuum lines as well. Make sure that the little plastic tees and Y's where the vacuum lines connect are solid and haven't cracked. Good thing its a small engine, there aren't as many to chase.

Hope this helps I just pulled the engine out of my 96 to replace all the oil seals and at the same time I fixed this problem with mine. It also had the check engine light on with the EGR flow malfunction P400. I took off the upper intake where the throttle body connects and You would not believe the carbon on the back side of this it looks so clean on the front side and on the inside at the back where that small pipe goes from the intake to the EGR was stopped up with carbon. I took carb cleaner and cleaned out all of the metal lines that vac goes through from the intake and that tube to the egr and I took the egr off and cleaned out behind it also. Put over 200 miles on it this week and it is perfect now with no ac on. I got my info from this page http://www.asashop.org/autoinc/feb2005/techtips.cfm

It didn't make much sense till I got into it but this man knows what he's doing. I'm sure this can be done with the motor in but I had to replace the seals so with it out it made it so much eaiser. I think this will help I had the same problem. Well worth the trouble.

Tri taking out and cleaning the egr valve. Most importantly, in the intake manifold, the passage that connects with the front hole of the egr valve (vacuum port) has a tendency to accumulate carbon, especially in cold weather, effectively blocking the egr vacuum port, which renders the EGR valve unoperative. Try inserting a small screwdriver in there and if you find a carbon blockage, scrape it out. This should get your egr valve working again and your motor will run normally. Hope my cent works
