error codes and check engine light

Hi, I'm new to owning my 2003 Tacoma 2wd xtra cab.

My check engine light came on and I'd like to know where to look to see the error code or must I have a mechanic look at it?

Or is there a reset button I can access so I can reset it just in case this was just a misfired code on the ECU?

Carlton; It's almost ipossible to tell without having your ECU scanned to extract the code. You don't say where you are but if in the USA and you have Autozone or Advance stores nearby they will scan your ECU, it's free in our area. Once you get the code you can go to the on line 2003 Tacoma shop manual to get an idea where to begin your trouble shooting.

I don't have one of those stores around and discovered that every mechanic in town want to charge $50-$100 to run the test. I know this only take a few minutes so I don't think it's worth it.
I just purchased online an OBD II scnner so I can scan the vehicle myself.
From there I can come back here and discuss with other what the problem will be and possible remedies or procedures.

I am new to this site, hopefully it will help us with our Ford Windstars problems. We live in Northern Ca; and our Autozone can no longer scan our van themselves but they will let us scan it.

Does anyone have a link for a 2001 crew cab maintenance manual ??
