change of timing belt

Anyone know when the timing belt should be changed on a 2000 Alero? I have 104,000 KM on mine now, and I hear they should be changed around 100,000KM. Someone told me they can do a lot of damage to the engine if they break.

Any comments?

Great news, pal! There is no timing belt on both the 3.4L or the 2.4L engine. They both use a timing chain that never require service/replacement. If your car gets really old or a ton (like, over 250K miles) miles on it, the chain and/or the gears may wear out and need to be changed. On these engines its not such a big deal if anything happens with the chain because they are both non-interference engines, which means there is no chance of the valves coming in contact with the pistons if the chain breaks (also good news). So, no need to worry about the timing chain.
