Removing turbine housing while on car or not?

Hey this may sound like a stupid question but for people that have swapped out turbo's many times could you answer this (I've only swapped a turbo once so far). I was wondering if I could remove my turbine housing while the turbo's still on the car or should I just drop the whole turbo out and do it that way? I guess my question is which way is easyer?

I need to replace my 14b turbine housing because of big cracks by the flapper, which is causing slow spool.

i would think it would just be easier to take off the whole turbo and then pull it apart.

Yeah I guess I have to pull the whole turbo out then. Another question I have is, if I disconnect the oil drain line from the pan (with oil still in the pan). Will oil come pouring out from the pan? I know ill get some oil from the turbo but will the pan empty itself out through the oil drain line hole?

if you keep the end of the part that you took off the turbo above the outlet on the pan then no it won't. but say if the end falls on the floor it will pour out until you get it above the point on the pan. laws of gravity. get what i'm saying?

in a propper turbo instalation the oil drain is above the oil level, so no oil should leak out. if it is not above the oil level then you should consider revamping your drain tube location.

Holy shit, leave the turbo in the car! I used to be able to go from pulling in the garage to porting the turbine housing in 10 minutes. If you still use the one stud and 3 bolt deal, its a little more work, but can still be done. Either way, anyone using that POS stud should shitcan it imediately and get a 4th bolt from the dealer.

1) Remove downpipe to O2 housing hardware.

2) Disconnect O2 sensor wire.

3) Remove the manifold to turbo bolts.

4) Remove the 10mm bolt from the band clamp that holds the turbine housing to the center section. Dont let the housing just nag there, pull it straight off the center section so you dont ding the turbine wheel.

5) Install is the reverse order of removal.

6) Drive it on.

Stock drain tube location is just fine ;) A little oil will dribble out. Sometimes just having the front of the car jacked up will keep it in there. Also depends on how full you have the pan. This isnt some cobble together honduh turbo kit. These cars came from the factory with the drain line setup correctly. ;)

You might have to use a rubber mallet to knock it loose if it hasn't been removed in a while. Did it come off okay?
