I looked under my friends montero the other day and noticed that his engine looked almost identical to mine, just a 3.5L instead of my 3L. would it be possible to put a montero engine in a 3000gt? i know that the ecu and wiring harness probably won't match....soooo i thought that maybe i could use the block from the montero and bore it out to almost a 4L and then slap on my intake manifolds and exhaust. is this possible or am i just really reaching for something here?

john monnin is actually in teh process of doing that exact swap. To my knowledge it has yet to be done, but he is definantly in the process. Last I read, he was writing up a guide, but there were ALOT of small parts to order, ALOT of small parts to fabricate...not exactly a direct drop-in type of swap.

Here is the thread on 3si:

it's definatly something that i want to do. i think the timing is off on mine, it's backfiring through the plenum(spelling) i think. it's been through alot, not too sure if it'll even last when it gets turned back on.

Well just from a few minutes of reading, it sounds like you will need a J-spec 3.5L It isn't from the Montero, it is from some Jap Mitsu cars. And then on top of that, you will need to get quite a few custom pieces made, as the alternator, power steering mounting brackets, timing belt cover wont fit. The radiator hosing is on the other side, so you will need to run some custom piping. And EVERYTHING is a custom fit...John Monning had to do quite a bit of shaving just to get it to fit on a 5spd...and said he doubted it would work with a 6spd tranny and t-case. And lastly, it may not fit under the hood. Just some things to think about. But read through all those threads...lots of good info if you plan on pursuing this swap.

i'm not sure when i will be able to do this, but i'm just glad that it's a possiblity. the mods shouldn't be a problem, i know a shop that does great engine work and custom builds parts. it'll be a lil costly, but this might be my project car soon.

got a 6g74 motor, and i'm getting ready to do all the work, but john monnin's site is down and all of those pictures that he had aren't being hosted. is there another way to get the basic process of this or does anyone know how to get ahold oh mr. monnin. i really want to get this done as soon as possible. THANKS!

Congrats on getting the motor. I would think the best way to contact him, would be to go to the first thread I linked up there ^. And Private Message him on 3si.

i'd like to , but i don't have a 3si account. it won't let me get one with my email address or something. i'll see what i can do though. out of al the threads, most people say the hood won't close, so i'm thinking of getting one off the kaze website. we'll see what happens, the website is hard to read cause of the whole language barrier thing.

do create an account on 3si you have to provide an e-mail that's not of a free mail account (i.e. no hotmail, yahoo, gmail...etc).

so contact your ISP and ask them to give you an e-mail address for your subscription (i.e. @earthlink.net, @swbell.net, etc). that should be part of the service. if you have school/college e-mail, that will work as well.
