Automatic Locks

I own a 98 grand prix gt and i've become frustrated w/ the automatic locks. They don't unlock until I turn the car off. I'd like to change it so that it unlocked when I put it in park. Just wondering how to do this, if possible, and how difficult it would be.

I have a 98 also. Drives my Wife nuts, not me. I don't get out of the car unless it's off.
My 97 unlocks when it goes in park. I know, who cares.
As far as I know, your stuck with it, till you sell it.
If you pull fuse, locks don't work. Never have heard of a way to program it.
That would be something that Big-L could come up with. But he's only out here once a month now.
Let us know if you find anything out.

There's a section in the Owner's Manual on how to reprogram the locks. If you don't have one, let me know, and I'll try and remember to post the instructions. It's not too difficult, I've done it on several cars. There's 3 different ways they'll work, I think...don't automatically lock, automatically lock and unlock in park, and automatically lock and unlock when car shuts off.

I know the owner's manual is crappy but sometimes it makes for good reading especally when you're try to figure out what mode the power door locks are in. :dunno:

Sounds like GTPGirl has it taken care of for you guys. My OCR scanner is out and I'm too lazy to post the instructions. :lol2:

I know this works with the 99 not sure about the 98.
When I tried to do it the it asked for the security code and I have know idea what that is?

yeah if you could post the directions on how to set it so that they unlock when i put it in park i would appreciate it very much. I didn't receive an owner's manual when i got my car so that would be very helpful.

Hey KustomKid54 if your '97 unlocks when you go to park and locks when you go into reverse/drive, etc then its working correctly. Thats how mine works. Its operating either in Mode 3 or 4. I think there's a total of 4 modes. At least something works right. :lol2:

Okay...here goes.

1. Turn the ignition key to LOCK or OFF.

2. Remove the MALL PGM fuse from the instrument panel fuse block. (Passenger's side, inside glove box)

3. Turn the ignition key to ACCESSORY

4. Listen for the chimes.

Now, to put the car in Mode 4, Automatic Unlocking and Locking with Transaxle in PARK, do the following after the chimes finish:

1. Press LOCK on the power door lock switch.

2. Count the number of chimes you hear. The number of chimes tells you which mode your vehicle is set for (1=Automatic locking/unlocking OFF; 2=Automatic LOCKING only; 3=Automatic locking/unlocking with the ignition off; 4=Automatic locking/unlocking in park). You change the mode by pressing LOCK on the power door lock switch again.

3. Repeat step 1 until the number of chimes matches the mode you want.

To exit programming mode, turn the key from ACCESSORY to OFF and replace the MALL PGM fuse.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for taking the time and posting the procedure for the guy that needed help in the first place. Just out of curiousity I pulled out four owner's manuals: 97 GTP, 01 Regal GS, '99 Regal LS and 02 Olds Alero and reviewed the procedures for programming the power door locks. You'll never believe this but they're all different. Pontiac is the only one that requires pulling a fuse and probably the more complex. I would have figured that GM would have standardized the procedure for all of its "W" bodies and other models. Oldsmobile had the easiest and quickest procedure.

The only advice I would have for people that purchase used vehicles is be sure to get an owners manual with it. Oh well, learn something new everyday.

I'm just wondering if this is going to work on my 99GT because the manual says something different.
According to it its done with the radio buttons but I need the security code.I don't know what that is.
I'll post back what happens, I'm going to try it anyway.

You've brought up a good point Wylie and it supports my point that the owner's manual comes in handy because of all the variances between GM models and especially within the Grand Prix model line depending on the year of production and options you may have. Its mind boggling. :dunno:

O Happy Joy!!! it worked and I looked in the MAN again and it doesn't say anything about that procedure in there.

Bob,
You are wondering about GM? How can you wonder anything about a company that keeps making cars with stuff wrong with them? Like putting a release for your key WHEN it messes up. Or a release for the trans when it sticks in park.
If you know something is wrong, FIX IT for the next year. The biggest joke is their radios. They knew the radio display was messed up in 1997. Did they fix it? No. The service dept down the street from me, has the line all worked out. "Take it out, bring it in, and we'll add it to the stack. When we have 50, we'll send it out to be fixed. Cost? $160.00"!!! Oh, they ship them out about every two weeks.
Don't wonder about them. They are making a ton of money. Wonder about us.

Wylie glad you got it resolved thanks to GTPGirl. Looks like everyones happy.

Jim (KustomKid54) I totally agree with you about GM. Maybe GM should worry about us and whether we are going to stay loyal as customers. At the rate they're going we'll all be driving rice-burners within the next 5 years. The analysts claim that Toyota will be the next GM in that timeframe. Too little, too late. Look at all the money wasted in non-standardization of simple things like power door locks. :shakehead

Sad but true, big North American Companies are so tied up in politics overseas competitors are going to walk all over us.
I wish they would forget about politics and just get back to making a good product.

No rice burners for me. Born in Detroit. But I do like the new Chrysler's. And that hasn't happen since 1964!!!!!! OK, 1969, Roadrunner and GTX were nice.
I'm thinking of selling the GTX, and buy a bike.

Jesus Christo KustomKid54 what the hell is that. Looks like something out of "Pimp My Ride" gone bad. lol

Hey you don't have to be born in Detroit to be anti-rice burner. My mother's Korean and I can't stand rice burner cars. You'll have to pry my American car out of my cold dead hands. I've got 4 GMs and one Honda motorcycle rice burner only because no American company makes a good motocross machine. When you get to our age motorcycles are good therapy. :lol2:

On Chrylers nothing like the 1970 Dodge Challenger RT or Plymouth 'Cuda.
Had a '70 Dodge Challenger RT with 440 Magnum when I joined the service and I regret to this day getting rid of it. One in mint condition today goes for up to $50K. Oh well! Live n learn.

A friend of my Sister, has a 1970 426 Hemi Charger. Some guy has offered $125,000.00. Car always comes in first at the Mopar shows. The guy has never thought of taken any offer for it.
For that price, I'd sell 3 of the kids, and the dog. :22yikes:

Yeah! Its good ole El Paso (El Piso). Lots of desert. Its getting hot, we're hitting 100 degrees this weekend. I used to race a Hodaka Super Rat 100 MX when I was 15. Long time ago (35 years). I stick to the Vet. class now. Can't afford to break any bones. Jim (KustomKid54) knows all about this place and Ft. Bliss.

Got my '97 GTP ready for the summer with new coolant. Its going to be a long hot summer.

Nope, moved to this place to take care of my Mother-in-Law. If something happens to her, I'm gone. Would rather be in Michigan. But the Wife likes it here. Maybe she will come visit in the summer. If not, I'll email her.

Been to Canada more times then I can count, which isn't really that high. Living in Michigan most of my life, crossed into to Canada all four ways that you can (from Michigan). I'll let you figure out how that is. No, not drunk, stowed away in the trunk, or horse back.

BTW - We hit 98 degrees yesterday. Today's high is 101.
