My '96 taurus just broke down on the highway and now is parked in my yard and we have no idea what is wrong...it started to whirl coming down a hill and now won't move at all. It starts up but you can hear a whirling sound and when you put it in Drive it won't move. The tranny fluid is clear and does not smell at all.
When we jacked it up and moved the drive side tire, the whole engine moves, on the passenger side when you try to move the tire you hear a clicking sound but the engine doesn't move as much...any ideas? Nothing is visably broken but we need help to figure out what to check.

Not sure, but my best bet is its the tranny. The engine starts and runs, therefore its got to be the transmission. Maybe the torque converter. Does the engine run fine other than the whirling sound? With it up on jacks, do the wheels spin freely with the engine running? If so to both the engine and free turning wheels, then get thee to a transmission shop for complete diagnostics.

it sounds like you snapped an axle, CV, or even the output shaft which in turn broke a motor mount.
