Speedometer gear in trans out (fix?)

Can anyone tell me how to get to the gear that the cable runs off of? I took out the connection that the cable goes into and inside the trans there is a gear that runs on the shaft inside. I can feel it and it just spins on there. Anyone deal with this fix?

what kind of car? and you probably need to take apart your tranny to get to it... see if you can snag a junkyard one.. may be cheaper than bringing to a shop.
