I recently installed a radio/cd player in my 90 GMC K1500. The wiring should be the same as a Chevy. I won't be home for a while but I can post later tonight what the gray wire is for.
I probably wont be able to post until 10 PM PST tonight.

The factory service manual shows:
Black = Ground
Brown = Park Lamp
Gray = Dimmer
Yellow = Ignition
Orange = Memory (always on)
The Gray wire also goes to AC Controller, I/P Cluster and Convenience Center. It also goes to the Fuse box "Panel LPS 5 Amp Fuse",
The Yellow wire is connected to the Radio 10 AMP Fuse.
Hope that helps.
I would make sure that you are getting +12 volts at the harness with the yellow and black wires (ignition on).

Yes it is the yellow lights in front of the truck. At night time, it will dim the display lights of the radio. It is not required to use it.
Are you putting a stock radio in or is it aftermarket?
