has anyone got any advice on it? ive read that these ls1 motors can take a beating and can last a long time so im thinking thats its a good replacement for my tired 305tbi. great motor if you dont wanna go fast and just want a daily driver. Ive also read about a guy doing the the swap on a thirdgen formula and it ran 12.7 1/4 mile times right after the swap. is this true? And with this swap the ls1 motor should still get about 20-25 to the gallon depending on my foot correct? I was worried for a while that I might have to get a honda and sell my 89 camaro just because of gas and my car has over 140000 on it. thanks a bunch.

The LS1 is VERY efficient. I am cammed, and can still get 27 MPG on the highway. Not bad for a 400 horsepower car.

12.7....I don't know about that. Unless the 3rd gen is a bunch lighter than the 4th gen. Or there were other things going on......like slicks, or some short short gears.

third gens are considerable lighter... plus in order to do the swap u'll end up putting a much less restrictive exhaust on their. those times are very much possible. if u are serious i want u to check out this website that can help u with the swap...

http://www.fbodymotorsports.com/ls1_conversion_parts

if u also look around the site, they did their own conversion on a '91 z28 convertible... u can see what they did as well...

wow....thats great! Some of those parts on the web site are extremley expensive. $750 for a wiring kit? 700 for the headers? Is it just me or is that realy high? Cant i just take the oem harness from the donor car? Stuff that ill need are things like some way to convert from electrical speedo to mechanical. And wont i need to reprogram the computer to do without all of the other electronics that wont be there anymore? I cant decide if it would be better to get a donor car or pick-up one of these combos that you can get from places all over the internet that come with everything.

I just dropped $800 for headers for my car. Just one part of many I have recently ordered. You can dump a LOT of money into an LS1.

The parts are expensive, much more so than that of the earlier SBC.

yeah.....took a good long look at what they had to do to convert the thirdgen to have an LS1. While it would be freakin awsome to have.....it aint gonna happen...thanks for the help anyways

What about compromising in the middle and run a LT1 swap? Not as much power but also not as much cost?

lt1 swaps aren't exactly cheap either, unfortunately...

yeah i was telling a guy yesterday that for the money spent u wont get much gain for the buck. a ls1 is the smarter deal if u can afford it.

OR... you can get an L98, much cheaper than the other two... can be built up pretty good too, for cheaper price... only if you got holes in your wallet and pockets.

Are ls1 heads different than normal ones? is that why they are so expensive? For around 4500 i can get the motor and tranny. Id like to get the 6 speed because i have an auto right now. But Im thinking that i would need a different speedo and tach and temp gauges and everything realy. plus whatever id need for the swap from auto to manual. Can 4th gen gauges be made to work and fit in a thirdgen cluster setup? Plus...for the ebrake....what all is required to make one work if i swap out the rear end as well? I havent totally given up on the idea....i just cant sell my car. Im very attached to it and id like to put some more rumble under the hood if ya know what i mean. Sorry for the barrage of questions. Thanks

Im asking all these questions as well as reading up on it because many of the sites that put information up have many more resources and much more ability to do the job. stuff like welders and lifts etc. This will be done in my garage at best. or my slanted driveway that makes work on cars oh so much fun. Thanks

an ls1 is completely different from anyother small block chevy. absolutely nothing is interchangable between them. so the differences lie in much more than the heads...
