1999 Engine Light

I have a 1999 2WD. The check engine light came on, took to Autozone and their reader came back with no problems. Took to local shop, they told me that somewhere in the fuel evaporation system there is a problem. Maybe a cracked hose or bad solenoid. Do the purge solenoid's go bad and is there any way to check it before replacing? After about 4-5 minutes at idle the vehicle will act like it wants to die with low erratic idle. Is this a sign of the fuel evap problem?
