Need Advice For Spark Plugs

96 3000gt SL around 100k
Am planning to change spark plug and i was wondering what spark plug should i get? What spark plug do you guys use? Where online can i find great perfomance long lasting spark plugs? If you want affordable and long lasting, go with platinums...I'm partial to NGK

www.importperformanceonline.com probably has the same plugs, possibly for less $$

I've done some extensive research in spark plugs, and went to www.importpoweronline.com and spoke with the owner (everyone calls him IPO on 3si.org)

platinums are actually not liked very well due to the low conductivity of the plugs, and the coppers are much better for spark. I recently (last week) purchased some spark plugs from IPO to go in my car when I get my 120k service done on my car on 6/4/05. He's got an SL...hence no real worries about spark blowout. Coppers are better conductors, but need to be replaced much sooner. I believe our vr4s come stock with platinums...so they should be fine on his SL.

well he owns the company and he spoke for all 3s cars. He said all in all plats suck (his exact words exactly)

sure they have to be replaced more often, but $12 each or $12 for 6 and basically do the same thing. No brainer there.

I agree with you 100%, coppers-only for my car. But this guy is asking about a stock SL and said he didn't want to change them often, which is why I said platinum. Our cars come stock with platinum, I know plenty of cars have done fine with them. So whether they are the 'best' option, or whether they fit his needs is really what it is about...just my .02

How come some of the spark plugs on 3sx are so expensive? And aren't those plugs the same ones that Gateway just posted on Import Power Online?

iridium is the most expensive, then platinum, then copper.

The more expensive, generally the longer they last for normal cars. However, coppers are the cheapest and best conductors...but they need to be replaced more often. And if you are paying someone to swap your plugs...they charge alot, so some value copper for performance, some value the other ones for their longevity. Personally, I think getting copper and learning to swap your own plugs is the best way to go, and I think Gateway would agree.

I dont really know how to change the spark plug because i read a manual or direction for my car it seem to much work(unlike honda), if i bring it to the shop for labor only, how much would it cost?

It's not harder, it's just more time consuming. There are instructions for doing the work are in the FAQ. Shops will charge at least an hour for labor, possibly more...and with rates of $50-75/hour, that is just ridiculous for something you could do in your driveway with a few basic tools.

Go to Autozone, tell the guy at the counter that u need spark plugs. Tell him the car, and he'll pull up a list and tell you what is compatible. There is pregapped and not pregapped. Pregaped costs btwn 5 and 10 dollars more (depending on the brand). Ask him what the gap needs to be and for a gapping tool. The gapping tool looks like a coin and the edge is real skinny. Going counter clockwise around it, the edge starts as .020 inches up to .100 inches. Ask the dude at the counter to show you how to use it, or probably any other customer in the store and they will explain it. Its really a piece of cake. don't be nervous about using it.

my friend just replaced his on his 91 eagle talon and he said it took him all of 15 minutes because i dont remember he either said they didnt need to be gapped or they were pregapped so he just took the old ones out put the new ones in and it was done that quickly...why would it take any longer to do on our cars?

Because to get to the rear 3, you need to take off the intake plenum which is just time consuming if it is your first time, because everything is attached to it.

My first time removing a DOHC plenum was last weekend. It took me all of 20 minutes to have it completely off. I left the TB attached, and unplugged the TPS, IAC, VICs, and the other sensor on the drivers side. Its much easier than it looks.
