A tune-up will not hurt especially if you have a lot of miles on the car. You didn't say what size engine you have but my guess is that you have a dirty idle air control motor. It controls the idle when both hot or cold. If you change the plugs and wires, clean the IAC. Just remove it from the throttle body, spray with carb/throttle body cleaner and then replace it. It looks like a little motor bolted to the side or top of the throttle body. Just don't move the pentel when you have it apart. This should cure your problem.

Just a nother thought to add to GTPDad's info: If you do have a lot of miles on the car you should also think about adding some fuel injector cleaner to the gas tank or even have the injectors professionally cleaned. Again, if you have a lot of miles it will not hurt to get those injector cleaned.

Not as new as your ride, but the IAC still the same thing.

Hey Knife Blade, what do you mean by your posting "but the IAC still the same thing". you mean it needs to be cleaned?

Yes he means it still needs cleaned. Once you get the computer scanned post the codes and we will try to help you correct the problem.

i will post the codes if they give them to me. my one question is, if it is the idle air control valve wouldnt the car idle rough everytime i came to a stop and not just go off after warm up? it doesnt occur when the car has warmed up.

i was told that there is away to find the code by turning the igintion on/off a certain amount of times and wait for the check engine to flash and get the code that way? does anyone know anything about this? if so could you tell me how many turns it is?

I don't believe that works on GM's ( key turning) I think that is a chrsyler thing that if you turn the key 3-5 times it'll tell you the codes. You need a scan tool for the GM's.
I had a similiar problem to what u describe, Eventually my Check engine came on too, it came out to be a disconnected hose( when the light came on), I'm assuming it was a vacuum leak the problem seems to be resolved... it oculd be the same problem, or something else...

i also forgot to mention that when the check engine light came, the Track Off light also came on then went off about 20 seconds later. the shop hasnt put the car on the diagonistic machine today. they will tomorrow. the service manager who is a master tech says to him it may be a fuel ingector (worst case) or maybe a bad coil pack or a wire. i will keep everyone up to date with it. anymore help will be great.

well everyone. it was the worst case ever. it was the 4th fuel injector. so there replacing it.
i do have one question. when a place does a diagonistic test on a care do they normally charge for the test when you let them do the work? should the charge be waived?

thaks for all your help

Goes both ways.... I've had local shops quote me both ways.

Like Madcat says, depends on shop, usually they'll discount price the scan if they do the repair, cuz they still have to pay for the scanner and assorted comp. stuff.
