i recently purchased a 1999 z28 for my wife. i was cleaning it up one day and stumbled on something that may be useful to someone. i got a good deal on this car so when the transmission wouldnt shift out of first i figured id be buying one. i came here and started checking on tranny problems and was diagnosing the possibilities then the engine really started running bad. that was too much so i really started digging into postings and while reading a posting i remembered seeing an aftermarket programmable plug in chip. took down the manufacturers name looked them up and there it was. unhooked it and been doing great ever since. point being if its a new to you car might be worth checking it out.

a chip, you unplugged it and it ran fine? you mean a computer chip or a sensor.

passenger side under the hood right at the windshield is the wiring connection for the computer. this chip was installed right in the wiring plug in. it changes everything from idle to shifting. when i removed it it went directly back to original operation. make sure if you find one of these to get the manufacturers name look it up and contact there support for removal. i would imagine there are several manufacturers of the aftermarket chips. hope this helps

Glad it was a simple fix :) usually involves taking out the engine installing several new things using hammers, cranes, poodles, large heavy ojects and the like.
