Logan airport... *SHUDDER*

A fan of monochromes, I see! Any particular reason?

Also, the third photo of the cliffs - with the fort - is my favorite. Excellent shot :)

for that shot, i actually climbed over the fence and was sitting in a grassy knoll...about 4.5 feet from the edge of one of the sheer, 800-foot high cliffs. my dad was on the other side of the fence, freaking out because he thought i was going to fall.

I couldn't have done that if I tried,
Especially since I'd have to leave my room first,

Excellent work, yes you should look into selling some of those, or look into photography school or some kind of a profession involving your talent, amazing eye,
The tulip in your front garden, amazing color,
What kind of camera are you using?

Breathtaking photos! I'm with -Davo on this one,

it's a plain old run-of-the-mill Canon Powershot A70. no lenses, no modifications, no alterations with photo-shop or anything. just straight from the camera.

thanks for the comments. :)

#1 is very good, wire at the top is a big detractor
#2 not enough drawing your eye in
#3 very good, too much clutter in lower left quadrant
#4 good, pole and railing clutter
#5 good, but not spectacular
#6 not unique enough
#7 too cluttered
#8 good, telephone poles are distracting
#9 background too cluttered and colors don't tie together well enough
#10 doesn't draw you in well enough
#11 doesn't draw you in well enough
#12 pretty good, nothing particularly wrong with it but for some reason isn't expescially appealing.
#13 pretty good, not enough lines toward center
#14 THIS ONE IS KICKASS. nice work.
#15 too many lines upward, can't tell which is primary subject. too many subjects.
#16 pretty good, but too many lines upward
#17 pretty good, leaves the impression of being pretty cluttered though
#18 VERY GOOD. good composition and balancing of light and dark, chair on the left edge of photo is a detractor
#19 very good. good composition. light/shadow balancing could have been slightly better.
#20 too dark
#21 good, but hardly seems original
#22 lines don't draw you in
#23 work on placing of subject, in need of more prominent subject
#24 background too cluttered, colors too distracting.
#25 decent, but lines don't draw you in
#26 better than most. seems cluttered. which is main subject?
#27 very good. foreground is too light, rope on the right is distracting.
#28 too many lines upward
#29 good. composition could be better
#30 strange angle, I don't really like it
#31 very good, sidewalk is too light.
#32 AWESOME! this is the best one. Absolutely nothing wrong with it.
#33 good, shadow on ground beneath bench (of a lightpole?) is distracting. would be better if whole bench was pictured.

Really? It's a good photo, but I disagree with it being the best of the batch. Just nitpicking here (it's still a very good photo!), but it seems to be very bright and almost washed out (maybe just on my monitor?) - perhaps a little less exposure would help?

actually the last 2 of the lighthouse were taken in a mode on my camera called "Vivid", where it brings out the colors and gives that effect. some like it, some don't. i think it makes the pictures look like paintings almost.

and evan, thanks for the criticism but seriously, and don't take this the wrong way but...you are WAY too nitpicky. i mean any criticism is good criticism and i welcome your response...but if you focus on finding faults with a picture instead of enjoying it for what it is and focusing with what's GOOD in it...then what fun is that? for example the one photo of the river, with the boat and fishing rod in the bottom of the pic...you call them clutter, when i put them in the picture on purpose to add a sort of effect to it. a nice lazy river, with a boat and a fishing rod...kinda relaxing looking? makes you think happy thoughts?

just an observation, take it how you will.

I wasn't posting to be negative, I was posting to say what I thought could make each picture more appealing. Nitpicking is what professional photographers do; they take several dozen rolls of very good photos, then they will go through those and pick maybe 4 or 5 of the best, the ones that are most appealing. For every photo you see on display in a gallery, upwards of 100 were probably taken.

i didn't mean to say you were being negative, i guess i worded my response wrong.

what i'm saying is, in most of the pictures, you call things "clutter"...like backgrounds, objects in the picture, or the picture in it's entirety. these things, to me, aren't clutter at all. they are helping to create the picture. for instance, the garden picture of my tulip. you say the background is too cluttered. well, it's a garden isn't it? gardens are cluttered, are they not? i'm taking a picture of a flower, it's in a garden, and i want you to KNOW it's in a garden...so who cares if the background is cluttered? people looking at the picture will know it's in a garden and to me that adds to the picture, not detracts from it. what was i supposed to do, uproot my entire garden save for that flower?

in some, such as that one, there really isn't a way to avoid "clutter". but to me, "clutter" as you call it, is CHARACTER. it adds things to the picture to help you get a feel for it, ie where it was taken, when (what time of day, time of year, etc.) etc. etc.

in others, you say to work on placing of subject, such as the one of the cliff with the small castle on top of it. that picture was meant to be taken as it is, with the cliff off to the side and showing the vast expand of ocean that was right beside it. it wouldn't really be a much better picture if i had just stuck the cliff right in the middle, now would it?

as for originality/uniqueness, it's hard to do these days. people have been taking pictures for over a century now, EVERYTHING has been done. i'm not really trying to be unique with EVERY picture i take, i'm just trying to take nice pictures that people will enjoy.

with that all said, i welcome your criticism, but as i have pointed out here, in my opinion you nitpick about things that don't make sense or don't need nitpicking, or nitpick about something when i meant to do it that way! :) trust me, i'm nitpicky with my pictures too. i have over 5000 pictures i've taken on my computer, and how many did i deem worthy to post up on here? 32?

I don't know how many of you are familiar with the actual art of photography...there are several different types of photography...at the current moment I cant come up with a few of the names...but Brian has demonstrated several different types. In some of the pictures, the back ground is cluttered but there is 1 object in particular in focus. Photography is an art and not everyone likes all photographers pictures. Everyone has their own opinion and that's what's wonderful, it helps the artist, in this case brian, perhaps see others points of view. However, although you may not like the particular pictures that he took, how boring would it be if you just had a bunch of straight angle open spaces? I mean, he has some very unique pictures that I'm sure many of us could not take, I know I couldnt for one. I'm not being nasty or criticizing or anything, just saying that what you may feel is"cluttered" to someone else, me perhaps, its unique.

thanks Kate. that's what i was trying to say with my last post i guess, that every photographer is different and there are in fact different types of photography too.

so Evan, i thank you for your criticism and take it with a grain of salt. ;)

that's kind of what i was going for. the town WAS pretty creepy at night. me and my dad walked to a pub for dinner from our hotel, and it was drizzling. all the shops were closed, the alleys were all lit with very orange lights (as you can see in the picture) and the town itself was very old. barely any cars or people either. it was pretty creepy.

thanks for compliments man :)

I personally would have used a super macro lense for that shot. It would allow the background to become less distracting because it would shorten the range of focus.

in some, such as that one, there really isn't a way to avoid "clutter". but to me, "clutter" as you call it, is CHARACTER. it adds things to the picture to help you get a feel for it, ie where it was taken, when (what time of day, time of year, etc.) etc. etc.

Clutter becomes character when it works in harmony with the rest of the clutter :)

in others, you say to work on placing of subject, such as the one of the cliff with the small castle on top of it. that picture was meant to be taken as it is, with the cliff off to the side and showing the vast expand of ocean that was right beside it. it wouldn't really be a much better picture if i had just stuck the cliff right in the middle, now would it?

I would have put a little more of the cliff in the shot to allow more activity in the photo, but that's just me. Generally putting a subject in the center of a photo is bad. Some basic optimal positions can be found by dividing the frame into thirds vertically and horizontally, and placing the subject where the lines intersect. It's also good to have predominant lines leading toward the subject.

as for originality/uniqueness, it's hard to do these days. people have been taking pictures for over a century now, EVERYTHING has been done. i'm not really trying to be unique with EVERY picture i take, i'm just trying to take nice pictures that people will enjoy.

What about that guy that said we should close the patent office because everything had been invented? Wasn't that in the 1800's? The point is, new ideas come along everyday, and every successful photographer has their own unique style that is generally not emulated by others. I try to make my pictures unique, perhaps you should to? Just a suggestion.

with that all said, i welcome your criticism, but as i have pointed out here, in my opinion you nitpick about things that don't make sense or don't need nitpicking, or nitpick about something when i meant to do it that way! :) trust me, i'm nitpicky with my pictures too. i have over 5000 pictures i've taken on my computer, and how many did i deem worthy to post up on here? 32?

I tried to find out how many pics taken by me are on my HD, but my 1.2ghz computer was too slow to count them (not search for them, COUNT them) in under 15 minutes. And yes, I defrag regularly :p. Out of those I have maybe 10-12 favorites.

anyways, no hard feelings dude, it was just constructive criticism.
