I found a 1991 Dodge Stealth ES for $1,995...It is Blue and is an Automatic...The problem is that it only goes in reverse park neutral and drive! Is there a reason for that...they say it still goes down the freeway and everything but it wont go to overdrive..but goes through town nicely...would it be worth my while to buy it and put a 5 spd transmission in it or could I fix the problem for now????

any help or advice would be great thanks

so basically your saying it just wont go into overdrive period.

There is usually one of two things for this. If it wont go into overdrive period, then it could be a problem with the computer or an electrical problem.

If it goes into 4th gear and and just revs like its in neutral, then your end clutch is shot. You can get a replacement from IPT for around 80 bucks, and this is an upgraded one. If you go to the dealer, they will charge you around 400 for parts and labor.

How many miles on the car? Like Hotshot said, if it only needs a new end clutch and has reasonable miles, then yea that's a good deal.

Ok, I'm just re-reading your post and trying to understand just what the problem is... "it only goes into park, reverse, neutral and drive." Those are the only choices in an automatic. Overdrive is just 4th gear. If you mean, as you're driving, it stops at 3rd gear (this might sound stupid) but make sure the little button on the shifter is pressed and that the OD light isn't on on the dash. If it doesn't go to 4th and this isn't the case, then Hotshots probably right. Have you actually driven the car? Go take it for a test drive and take it through the general motions and post any problems here.

Sorry if I'm just an idiot and am overcomplicating this.

it is stuck in 3rd...no first, second or overdrive... and when it shifts into reverse it has a hard jerk....

Ah, ok well in that case it's not your end clutch. Just sounds liek something more serious with the tranny itself. Sorry I can't be more help right now.

someone just posted about this a couple of days ago. Your transmission has gone into failsafe mode because there could be a problem with it. Your transmission control unit is throwing codes as a result of going into fail safe mode, so the best thing to do is take it somewhere and find out what the diagnosis is, unless you can do it yourself.

I knew this sounded familiar but I couldn't remember where I'd heard something like this. :iagree:

if you really like it, then buy it, it only matters what you think of it. 2 grand isn't a lot of money, so thats definitely a plus.

Might be a bit late but I myself have run into that problem just recently on my 91 dodge stealth. I bought a cd that has pdfs on it and I have traced the problem to 4 solenoids located behind thr auto tans fluid pan. Ie where the auto trans fluid filter is. In that area there are four solenoids that control valves to divert fluid for different reasons. To control up shift, down shift and some other things. Now the problem lies in either your control solenoids, wires to the solenoids or the TCM (also know as your transmission control module). If any of those components fail the TCM goes into failsafe mode to protect the tranny from hurting itself. If you test each solenoid and find a faulty one then replace it, and disconnect the battery. Reconnect the battery after 5 seconds and the failsafe will reset to normal operation.

Btw guys im new here :)
