What is with this gas milage?

Decided to go with a 2004 Grand Am when I traded in my 2000 Century a couple weeks ago. I normally got around 32 MPG with the Buick, highway and city combined. I thought I would do better with the new car, but the first couple fill ups, I got 29 MPG. I know the engine is a 3.4 as opposed to the 3.1 Buick, and there is a differance of 190,000 KM on the Buick, to 18,000 KM on the Grand Am. There is a big differance in size of the car too, so why such low milage?
Thanks

1) - the 3.4 has a larger displacement, so it's generally going to use more fuel = less mileage
2) - the GA is geared higher, so you're going to spin slightly higher = less mileage
3) - the GA isn't broken in all the way, might get up to 30 mpg after 5,000 more miles or so
4) - The mileage your getting IS what new Grand Ams get. So there is nothing wrong with your car that's causing this, it's just what the grand ams get. If you're getting 29 MPG with highway and city combined, I'd say that's damn good. That grand am is only suppose to get about between 28 to 30 on the freeway, so you're gettin good mileage for it.

I wish I got even 20 mpg in my 99 3.4L SE but as you can see from my other posts I might (and hopefully do) have a problem.

I have a similar prblem with my 2.4
I'm trying to get it sorted but haven't had much luck as of yet.
My mileage is very low. Let's put it this way. I filled my tank...drove about 130 kilometers...and then refilled. It took 20 liters to refill. I haven't done the calculations...but that doesn't seem good for a four cylinder.

Well, I have the 2.4 DOHC, I drive it pretty good and I averaged 10.18L/100KM or 23.11MpgUS. I say you're doing pretty good. Plus your car is set up to be sportier than a Century. It's like comparing apples to oranges. I would say your fuel consumption is pretty good.

Have you checked your tire pressure?

Wholly crap, I just reread your post! When I went to the RSM racing show in T.O. this weekend I got 538KM on one tank (It takes 45L to fill from empty). For the trip out there my cruise was set at 130KM/H and once we hit the 400 we rarely got below 150KM/H. Actually a good stretch was driven at 180KM/H :D . That's just messed up, Iwould check your o2 sensor and tire pressure like Klutz mentioned.
