hey i just got my oil changed about 200 miles ago and the change oil light came on today, about 2 weeks after i got the oil changed. I reset the light so its off, but is there any real reason that it came on? i hope nothing is wrong...thanks

The change oil light has a mileage timer on it. When it get to an x amount of mileage it comes on as a reminder to change the oil. When it is reset it restarts the timer. It was probably not reset when you got your oil changed cause it was not on, so it went off you remind you

Actually, the change oil light comes on based primarily on how you drive. The computer "tracks" various parameters like rpm, engine temperature, etc. and uses that information to decide when to turn on the light. Depending on how you drive, it could come on in 3000 miles or it could come on in 6000 miles.

I'll bet they just didn't reset the light when they did the oil change. So when it came on that was the car telling you when you were supposed to do the oil change. Unless the light is reset (even if it doesn't come on) the car doesn't know when the oil change is done.

Flowering it will kill your engine before 100,000mi. Not good for the transmission or engine.

vamc's right, and I should have been more specific in my post. The change oil light can come at any mileage, not just 3000 or 6000 miles, but it is based on the way you drive. The computer "tracking" starts over each time the light is reset whether you change your oil or not.

Yeah, it's a bit of a trick but it works after playing around with it: Nothing is wrong with the engine but this little annoying timer keeps track of your mileage and how hard you drive your car so don't worry if you just got it changed, just check it once in a while and get it changed at least every 7500 miles
2004 - 05 Grand Am
2004 Alero
2005 Cobalt
2005 Pursuit
1. Turn the ignition to RUN, with the engine off.
2. Fully press and release the accelerator pedal slowly 3 times within 5 seconds.
3. The reset is complete when you hear the chimes and the Change Oil light goes out. If the light stays on and no chime is heard repeat the reset procedure.
4. Turn the key to OFF.
5. Start the engine. If the CHANGE OIL SOON light comes back on, the engine oil life system did not reset. Repeat the procedure.
