I posted this question some days ago, but people misunderstood what I was asking.
here it is:
my brother has a 1996 mustang GT with the 4.6 and he has to redo the engine, but we can get a 5.0 out of a mercury for pretty cheap.... we need to know what is involved with this particular swap....
i'm a chevy guy so i don't know if there is anything different with fords and modular engines. if it's a pretty straight foward swap, we shouldn't have any problem doing it as, I've done a swap before.
he has a 5 speed manual.
Thanks.
ok... you all lost the original question... the question was how difficult is the swap and is there anything special involved?? we are not deciding between the two... we are going to go with the 5.0 as long as it will easily fit in without problems.
We are also keeping the 4.6 to rebuild it later... I know its a better engine.
we need to know if there is anything different about :
engine mounts
accessories
custom work needed?
etc.

something like that is going to be more trouble then it worth. Why would you want to go from a 4.6 to a 5.0 to a 4.6 again?
Besides the obvious motor swapping, the whole cars wiring and computer system will need to be replaced. Motor mounts, all accesories, trans bell housing. Too much to get into, for what it's worth. Not to mention, you probably won't pass emissions with a 5.0 in that car.
Please explaing to me the reason on wanting to do this? Why not just buy a DOHC cobra motor and swap it in?

Swapping a 5.0 into a 4.6 Mustang is not easy, is not straight forward, is not cheap, and is a huge pain in the balls. So it's not an easy temp fix to get the car on the road. Change ya plans to getting a 4.6 in there or building the other 1.

well the whole point is to get the car running at a moderate level of performance on a very tight budget. We can get a (complete) 5.0 much cheaper than the cost of rebuilding the 4.6. He was thinking that he would build to 4.6 to be a monster over the course of a couple of years.
The only option he has is putting something in ther to work for now (and the next few years or so) or rebuilding the 4.6. He hasn't been able to find a rebuild kit for less than $1000. He needs rings, seals, (not sure about mains), bore block, and probably new pistons for the 4.6.
I think right now he's tryin to find the cheapest route of getting his car running. What do you think?

I know why you thinking of swapping in a 5.0 and like I said before it is not cheap or easy. Finding a used 4.6 from a junkyard is the only real option.
