Tranny Identification

hi, does anyone know if there are any ways that i can identify if a tranny is for a specific truck???
i have a 93 ford E-350 diesel..... r there VIN on the tranny just like other cars????

any info will help, coz my dad's truck's tranny got stolen, n police wanna know how i can prove tranny if for the truck
