Ok well here's the scenario. I've been with my g/f for about 2 1/2 years now and love her with all my heart. I live in MD and she goes to school in NH (8 hours away). Growing up her mom and step dad smoked and it made her sick all the time and she HATES smokers. I've been smoking for a little over a year now(without her knowing).......I can't remember how it started, it just happened?!?!?!?!? Well i've been feeling really guilty about this and told her a few weeks ago and she got extremely pissed off..... She was madd I kept this from her and asked how I can hurt myself like this (I have Gastroesophical Disease and Acid Relux) so it hurts me more than a normal person. We didnt talk for like a week or so cuz we're both the most stubborn people in the world and didnt call each other. After a week she txt me and said we need to talk. I called her the next day and we talked about it. Everything was laid out about how could I do this, I owe over $3,000 on my car(past cars), insurance, etc. and i'm tryin to save up to go to school in Boston in the fall so I can be with her. She said how much do you smoke, I said a pack a day. Now I did the math, $3.85 a pack a day for a year is a little over $1,400........She said she can't be with someone who smokes and I have to decide whats more important to me, cigarrettes or her..........Now the obvious choice is her. I thought it would be easy but I can't stop, I mean i've tried. Everyday since then I talk myself into buying a pack then after I smoke one or two I step on the pack and throw it out.....Then it comes back up(work, friends, school) and I smoke knowing what it's doing to me. Now as of the past few months I noticed our relationship doesn't feel like it used to, I mean I still love her but just not sure if I want to spend the rest of my life with her. We've fallen apart and we're not as close as we used to be, but I still care about her. I mean I don't want to hurt her with this anymore and if the only way I can make her happy is by breaking up so I don't hurt her than that's what i'll do......I was just wondering what you all think I should do and if i'm an "asshole" or just confused and addicted????? Sorry for the long post but I just wanted to vent a little bit............Thanks

Have you tried the nicotine patches?
I've never smoked, so I wouldn't know how hard it is to quit. I would do as much as I can to quit if I were you. Just think of all the money you'd save. Maybe your relationship will improve after you quit.

I have to say i've never tried the patches, I wanted to try Philip Morris but all they do is give you a "Nicotine Replacement" like nicorette gum but still has nicotine....So their not helping you beat the craving their just taking away the smoke......BTW thanks for replying.

I smoked for 6 years up to 2 packs a day for the last 2 years of it. I quit cold turkey no problem. When you really know that you need to quit and want to quit you dont have a problem quitting. Just DONT buy any, go buy a bag of those little suckers a friend of mine said those helped him quit because it gives you a chance to do some actions like smoking.

If you don't have the feelings you used to for this girl, you need to face up to them and either work on the relationship to get those feelings back or end it and move on with your life.
As for the smoking. Keep at it. My father smoked 2 packs or more a day after he joined the navy. After fourty-six years of that, he finally made the decision to stop smoking. Its been nine months and he's stayed away. Its been tough, but if a sixty-eight year old cantankerous squid can quit - anyone can.

:22yikes:*applauding* this is the best girl problems thread I've read since I've been here.
As for the situation, I would try to re-kindle a old fire. If that doesn't work do what make you happy.....even if it means breaking her heart.......if its not already. tell her you need this time off to get yourself together to be with her. The catch is YOU have to really try and not give some half-assed effort.
Smoking is something I never wanted to have to quit...so I never started.
(damn. I like the way I said that.)
And if that doesn't work.......take Oz's future advice and FUCK HER SISTER!

Then dont. You should really take sivics advice becase c'mon losing a relationship over smoking is a pretty gay reason to break up, I really cant relate because im not addicted to it, so just try to do anything to keep the relationship going and give up the smoking. Like instead of buying cigs buy gum or something, i've kinda noticed that people who give up cold turkey need something to replace it.
