tranny noise....

i just got my new clutch and flywheel put in. I love it, but there are two problems, that i havent talked to the shop that put it in about (they are closed). First problem, the starter makes a noise just before the engine starts. Never happend before.

Second, i recall a thread about a part that falls out after you do a new clutch install that makes rattling noise when the car is in motion. I remember vaguely that it wasn't a big deal, but im not sure if its that exactly. The rattle is driving me nutz. I don't really trust the guys that did the install because they told me that my starter was making a noise BEFORE i brought it to them. Thats bullshit. So, recomendations? Ideas?

Your starter might need to be shimmed. Does it sound like it is hitting the wheel?

well, you haven't exactly described the noise it makes. but when you mention noise in that area, this combination comes to mind first, starter hitting the flywheel that is.I don't see what other noise a starter would make...?

its a grinding noise JUST before the engine fires up. Then, nothing. Last maybe a half second. Ever turn the egnition the while a car is already started? On some cars it makes a similar noise to what im hearing.

so it is exactly what i thought it was. the gear from the starter is hitting the flywheel. meaning your starter needs to be aligned properly to the flywheel.

So the whole thing has to be taken apart again to align it properly? Man, im gonna have a major argument with these fucking guys. They are lieing to me and i don't like it.

just the starter itself needs to be losened and bolted in correctly to lign up properly with the flywheel, and that is usually done with shims...

i doubt that. as far as i know the alternator mounts from the front. and is usually held by two bolts.

see what the starter does is, the solenoid on top actuates some sort of lever inside the starter that pushes a rod that has a little gear at the end towards the flywheel, and then starts to spin the flywheel. so if the gear that comes out does not exactly engage with the flywheel it will hit it and create that noise you are talking about.
