Earslfat and I want to know about the trannies from cars in the junkyard. Earl looking for a T-56 and wants to know what you guys think about purchasing from a yard. Should he rebuild it? I also want to know about the weak T-5 borg warner that came in the 305 maros. Are they the same as the ones with sixes? With a rebuild would it be able to withstand torque from the L98? How hard is it to convert from auto to stick? And if i can't get the T-5, could i use a 5-speed from the 4th gen maros? Would this bolt right up? My bad for all these questions.

I just got done changing trans in the wife's 91 formula...found out when I got it out that it was a junkyard trans someone had put in (pink numbers painted on top).ANYthing that you get from a junkyard (engine, trans, diff, etc) should be throughly gone through, inspected and rebuilt/overhauled if it doesn't pass inspection.
If you look for and find (doubtful on the find) a T5 WC trans from a later 3rd gen 305 camaro, it should hold up ok behind a STOCK L98...If it isn't a WC (world class) T5 it would just be a grenade with a fuse of undetermined length...it'll blow but who knows when.

So the ones from the sixes will not bolt up? Would i need to change the housing or something? They got plently of those sixers at the yard, no damn 305 ones though.

Change the bellhousing and it'll bolt up..and go boom shortly after you start drivng it. The reason you don't see the 305 WC's is because everyone wants them, they are the only T5 that will take a good dose of power through them.

Any idea what he's selling it for? Yeah, i live in boston. Morley, i planned on rebuilding the tranny so it can definitely handle the power, just really need the tranny that would bolt up. So i change the bellhousiong and it will bolt up, that's good news. I plan to pick one up from the yard, and total rebuild it, are the ones in the sixes the Borg Warner t-5 aswell? With weaker gears?

How hard is it to rebuild a trans, do they sell kits with all the parts, and what should I be looking to pay for a junkyard t56 (if I could even find one) and the kit (if they make them)?

Earl, i checked out car-part.com and gave me an idea on what the t-56 would cost at a yard, cuz usually most of the parts on that site are from junkyards. They went for about $1000-1200 for ones that were still good. Too much for my pockets. You should be able to get a beaten one for cheaper, i hope. Thats why i'm asking to see if the trannies from the v6 3rd gen are t-5 borg warner, becuase if so, i can switch bell housing and do complete rebuild.

Whothemafriggit? Some of those idiots want 5200 for a damn transmission! I could buy a richmond bulletproof 6 speed for that much! Even $1500 is steep as far as I'm concerned. I'd go for something about 750 - 1000 but peoples are goddamned crazy if they're gonna pay $5200 for a rebuilt transmission.
Am I wrong here, or is that what these things go for? Holy shit, I should just go buy a totaled maro or T/A for like 1000, part the bastard out on Ebay, and get my transmission for nothing.
I haven't had my engine dyno'd but I'm making a guess that it's pushing 400+ HP (un modded is what... 375?) so I need something HD. Is there anyway to take the 1:1 gear in a muncie to say .85-ish in a rebuild? If so I'll keep the one in there and rebuild it and try to throw an overdrive in as 4th.

$5200 is f****** crazy!!! What people will do to make money, feel bad for the idoit who buys it. $750 is definitely a reasonable price for a used T-56 at a junkyard, but these guys these days.... that why i'm tryin to get that T-5 borg warner from a V6 3rd gen (if it is the BW) cuz i believe i can get it for cheap now and i have all year to rebuild the summamabiotch for my swap next year.

Likewise, the M22 in mine is leaking and the synchronisers are going (won't hold 2nd without gas, grinds 4th). Figure I'd like to try swapping it next May, that'd give me some time to get it ready, but if these things are that much I'll have to get like 2 extra jobs to afford it.

I feel like we are related. I trying to get a better job so i can just restore old parts on my car. Shit is hard, man!! I'm gonna try and pick up a rearend and engine, both from a yard, rebuild them and then swap, but money is an issue. BIG issue.

Money's an issue... wait'll you have kids. It's my ONLY issue now.
Actually considering selling it, paying off all the debts I've accumulated and going after a newer one next spring. It'll break my heart, but I am considering it.

You oughta try calling a dealer or finding a website on maro's that has all the details: NastyZ28.Com might help, I know they have 2 Gen stuff, I'm pretty suree they have the other years as well. they tell you how to ID parts too, I think. If not try buying a Hayes manual for your year camaro, they DO tell you how to ID certain parts (like trannies).
